About this deal

The story serves as a poignant and timely reminder that understanding, respect and compassion can defeat prejudice and bigotry. Straight from the opening few chapters during the London blitz, it’s becomes clear on how much attention to detail the author try’s to explain what life was like during this time to younger readers. It tells the reader about all the difficult times that people faced during the war, such as Kindertransport, Hitler and deciding whether to evacuate your children. The story was set in February 1941 at the beginning of the second World War in London and Devon, two very different cities. It lends itself very well to teaching a WWII topic to a class, as the prolific use of wartime terminology and speech does a fantastic job of educating the reader on specific aspects of the war.

This character goes on to feature in three different quests, one of which poses a moral issue where players must decide what to do. This resource accompanies the video clip above and it introduces your class to the largest Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz, located in southern Poland. We've got a full quest walkthrough of the Lighthouse Lady quests right here, as well as explanations on what happens depending on which choice you choose in "The Lighthouse Lady's Wrath" quest. War and hate has the ability to divide communities but Letters from the Lighthouse shows how much can be achieved when people work together. I read through the book beforehand and then timed my teaching to coincide with the book so that my children were able to better visualise what I was teaching them.

In the backroom, you need to move the boxes around to be able to reach the door on the northern wall. This is a great resource that can accompany chapter 5 – Caring for Evacuees is a National Service from the Letters from the Lighthouse book. I enjoyed this book because there were a lot of mysterious things happening and at some points I didn't want to put the book down. I would like to read more books by Emma Carrol and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. I think we can learn a lot from this friendship as it shows us that prejudice and discrimination can be overcome by empathy and mutual understanding.A heart-warming and life affirming novel of the indomitableness of the human spirit and that compassion and family love can win through. There’s so many great Children’s historical fiction available at the minute and Carroll continues that trend. I felt transported into World War II: the rushing when there was an air-raid siren, why some children wanted to be evacuated and why some children did not, living with rationing and experiencing different lifestyles once evacuated.

I'm not sure if the history in the book was realistic as I think that Britain did allow refugees to come into the country in the second world war. And finding out more about how Cliff and Olive's father had died peacefully in the chair it was very interesting to know what had led up to that… he'd had a headache and then he'd died. I have read numerous stories set during World War II and having at the center the evacuation of English city children to the countryside. While in Devon, Olive begins to unravel the mystery and finds out that her sister is more connected to Devon than she realized. When Olive is caught in an air raid, her mum decides that it is time her children were evacuated out of London and she is sent, with her brother, Cliff, to live in a small coastal village in Devon. It seemed extremely realistic, so realistic I thought I was the character Olive and I would recommend it to someone who gets bored quickly because it has a lot of drama in it from the first few pages.

She looks at the Lighthouse light and, still thinking how it is “so much her, yet so little her” and.By providing a contextual explanation rather than just a standard definition, we can better help children understand the stories we are sharing with them and widen their vocabulary. A beautifully written story about bravery, compassion, understanding, and having the strength to fight for what you believe in. Along with her younger brother, Cliff, Olive is evacuated to the Devonshire town of Budmouth Point with no answer as to what happened to her older sister.
