About this deal

The Simpson StrongTie takes 1/2" bolts whose centers are 1 1/2" and 3 1/2" from the bottom. Still, I'd recommend marking the centers individually, in case there are small defects.

But, most of these arguments fall flat if you know how to use the board properly. The point of a Makiwara board is not to hit as hard as you can. This will cause serious injury and lead to inconsistent training. Even though it is wall-mounted, the two-level design will provide you with the same advantages a floor-mounted Makiwara would – the recoil, resistance, and toughness. A pad is more hygienic than straw rope. When you hit the rope you can develop little tears in your skin and bleed (especially for people who are just starting to use the makiwara). If multiple people use the same makiwara, there is a risk of transmitting blood borne diseases that way. With pads, you can have each student bring their own pad, or you can disinfect or wash the pad after each use.

Recommendations

Wall-mounted Board: The wall mounted board provides you with less recoil. So, students have used it to build the endurance of their bones and muscles. A proper training regimen can help perfect your posture, precision and increase the power of your strikes. This board can also be padded to ensure protection while hitting. The board can also be padded while hitting for conditioning and strength. But, a bare Makiwara proves to be useful in the long run as it teaches you the correct techniques. Insert the post into the post base so that the longest board is facing the area you'll be standing. You'll be bolting this in with two long 1/2" bolts, that have to be at least 4" long. I recommend facing the side where you'll screw the nuts on away from you, which should make it easier to not hit the bolts with your toes during practice. Tighten these as much as possible to keep the board firmly mounted. You may find, as I did, that the base itself moves when you strike the end of the makiwara, due to the leverage your post exerts.

Strike directly at the target covering the shortest distance possible. Keep your elbow pointed downward and your arm as close to your side as possible (except for furi uchi and similar techniques). If you have any hip rotation it should be slightly up/down rather than side to side. While side-to-side hip rotation helps generate external power, it also forces you to realign your body for each follow-on punch. This not only increases the time it takes to strike the target but also telegraphs your blow. Internally powered punches move faster, strike harder, and do not require this extra movement. In summary, both the punching heavy bag and the makiwara are helpful martial arts training aids. They are both friendly, and will stay put for you for as long as you want (unlike a training partner holding mitts, Thai pads, or his body for you to strike, who will tire or get bored). By understanding the utility of the two you can customize your training for better effectiveness. Maintain your mental focus, performing each blow with perfect form. Ten techniques executed with all your skill are better than a hundred performed haphazardly. Not only are you more likely to become injured with sloppy form, but you will also be reinforcing poor technique. What you do in training will heavily influence what you will do on the street. Basically, the makiwara can be a valuable tool, but it is not for beginners. If you already have experience using one in your regular Karate training, or if you’ve been training for a long time and believe you are both ready and responsible enough to try using this tool on your own, you might be a good candidate to build and use a makiwara at home. If possible, we recommend consulting your sensei for further advice on this topic before you start. Align the base with the frame, and trace out an outline of the 2x4s onto the surface of the plywood. We'll be using this to align our base so that we don't accidentally drill through the 2x4s for our bolts. The corner braces of the 1x2s will help us center our post base, and the whole outline will help in the next step to attach the plywood to the frame. Most sources recommend a regimen of hitting the makiwara 50–100 times per day, with each hand. It is especially important to train the weaker side of the body as hard as, or harder than the dominant side. [1] It is important to note that one should not use the makiwara so much that it causes them harm. Like all good training, there should be no lasting damage. This week, let’s take a look at how to make your own makiwara and how to train with it: What Is a Makiwara?
