About this deal

Explore the depths – This is a loose push-your-luck mini game, where cards are revealed one by one from the exploration deck of allies.

Abyss - Bombyx Abyss - Bombyx

Explore the Depths: Draw ally cards, one by one, from the exploration deck and place them face up on the board. The recruitment costs give you some flexibility especially if a Lord you wanted is scooped up before you have a chance. Each of the 35 Lord cards are uniquely rendered, giving off the perfect feel for each of their specific races ( squids, shellfish, crabs, seahorses, and jellyfish. g I prefer recruiting farmer lords who have no powers but high influence, and trying to combine them with locations to multiply up those points).

Much like the Lords, each Location varies in how it will contribute to the overall Influence Points total at the end of the game. You choose one to take from the locations stack and add them to your play area, covering up the special abilities of the Lords used to control it. The Leviathan Expansion builds on the amazing gameplay of Abyss and adds a few new elements into the game. It is unclear if these are meant to be kept secret, but we find ourselves laying them out face-up so that it is easy for players (and other players) to see what they have.

With there being 35 Lords, I’m sure some are unbalanced but if so, it hasn’t made a big difference in any of the matches I’ve played, and these cards stand out as a high point of the game for me. The card deck in the game consists of cards in five colours, with twelve of each colour and cards numbered 0-6. The number under the bubbles indicates the total value of Allies you need to play to recruit that Lord. Our mission is to produce engaging articles like reviews, tips and tricks, game rules, strategies, etc. With 2 players, the exploration loses a lot of its interaction and the council decks fill up less frequently.Tot up the scores from the monster tokens you hold, that scoring pile you just made, the base points of the lords that you recruited too.

Some of our partners may process your data as a part of their legitimate business interest without asking for consent. You definitely have to be mindful of how many cards you draw, especially in the games with a higher player count.

Another example is the Commander, which even has its own small “clarifying” section on the back cover but if you peruse the forums on BoardGameGeek, you’ll see a lot of people asking questions about this specific card so there still must be points to clear up. The draft becomes more interesting and important as you require certain allies to be able to fight the Leviathans. Once these are chosen, the active player picks one to control and then must place the others in the selection pool, giving their opponent’s a wider selection to choose from. The boards are there just to organize stacks of cards so there isn’t any time with fiddly pieces and trying to get them into their correct places.

I can talk about the different types of cards, the game board, or the various tokens that come with the game, but the first thing that is going to hit you in the face is the absolutely STUNNING artwork in Abyss. Any Lords used to control that Location lose all their Powers for the rest of the game, but still have their influence points. This was an interesting decision because on one hand, it stops a player from abusing a Lords power (and there are definitely some powerful ones, especially the red offensive ones), but on the other hand, it almost acts as a catch-up mechanic since when you gain control of a Location, you are gaining a decent amount of influence points. The player with the most points wins, if there is a tie it is broken by the player who has the most pearls.

Explore the depths - This is a loose push-your-luck mini game, where cards are revealed one by one from the exploration deck of allies. The components are made up mostly of cards and then a main board, a small sideboard, and then numerous cardboard Locations. From the second you open up the box (which comes in 5 different covers), you are greeted with a variety of highly thematic visuals. You may spend Pearls to help recruit: you must still play at least one Ally from each of the required Races, but if the sum of the card values is not high enough, you can spend one Pearl for each missing point (Pearls are paid to the Treasury).
