About this deal

This is a All grain mashing kit in the style of Summer Lightning with a little more hops and a little more malt which will give a gold coloured beer with a nice fresh and hoppy aroma with with a strong bitter taste using Golding and Challenger Pellets. There are more than 200 hop varieties, each with its own unique qualities, which in turn are affected by the growing conditions, so the same variety grown in Washington State and Worcestershire will have different accents and aromas. If a problem happens with the delivery please let us know and we will do our best to help, we can talk to Parcel Force to help solve the problem. It's an easy beer to brew, although true excellence depends upon top-flight ingredients. A base of British pale ale malt is the place to start. Maris Otter is generally regarded as the most nuanced in flavor, with light caramel- and nut-like qualities. A dash of pilsner malt will lighten the color and contribute a fresh, bright maltiness. I would use a little bit of unrefined sugar to add crispness without sacrificing character, and top it off with a few percent of wheat malt, which will help your beer settle into a compact, creamy head. This lable is marked 'Summer Lightning - Golden Ale. 5.0%'. The front lable is in the shape of a shield without the rather cheesy photo of a lightning bolt, there's a more 'trad' logo of a man's head instead.

Today saw me crossing the line into AG with a Summer Lightning clone. Many thanks to Garth for coming over and helping as I realise if I had done it myself, I would have made even more of a monkey's breakfast than we had managed! I'll explain later..... In this time, we acquired two further pubs, The Sultan in Wimbledon, South London and The Hop Leaf in Reading, both traditional friendly local watering holes. Hops grown in the Pacific Northwest of America have strong citrus, stone fruit, melon and piney qualities. With similar fruitiness, the hops of New Zealand and Australia come with more of a tropical lilt. In Germany and the Czech Republic, the classic hops are herbal, floral and grassy, with a bitter citrus depth. In Britain, traditional hops evoke an English garden, with flowers and leaves, stone fruit and berries, wood and spice. Look out, too, for new British varieties such as jester, harlequin, olicana and godiva, which have tropical aromas of passion fruit, pineapple, peach and lime. In response to customer requests, we’ve introduced brewery-conditioned Summer Lightning. The beer is now conditioned before bottling, and therefore achieves a much more consistent level of condition in the bottle. It also means that you can enjoy the full content of the bottle, and don’t have to wait for the beer to settle before pouring. We have not, of course, made any changes to the original award-winning recipe! Gluten-free and Vegan beer

Whilst they will never attract the same sort of attention as the bold and brash American hops that are so popular now, some drinkers are of the opinion that hoppy beer has to taste of grapefruit or citrus. What East Goldings add as an aroma hop if used in quantity is something fantastic in my view, you may just have to learn what it is for yourself. Here’s a recipe to help you discover it. Poured clear as recommended on the label, and at a slightly cooler temperature than usual for a British ale, Summer Lightning comes out pale golden with a warm orange glow, a very lively bead, and a thin bubbly white head that eventually subsides to lace. The aroma of perfumed hops is forward but not overpowering, with faint orange-like traces and a distant earthy and minerally scent. Even though it went with hiccups, I am in no doubt that AG is the way to go! I'm currently looking at S/S boilers and tuns The copper was set away to attain the boil before adding the hops. At this point I must explain that the boiler is an aluminium stand-alone boiler powered by gas....

Sparging was by batch sparge using a Youngs FV with grainbag and produced just shy of around 30litres of pre-boil wort. ***having read this again, I think it was more 27 litres***

This is much more energy-efficient and shortens the time taken to brew. This also means that at peak production times, we can brew more beer in a shorter time-frame – good news all round! Brewery-conditioned summer Lightning Why pellets - We think pellets are less mess then leaf hops and give better results and last longer with little degradation of the hop grams (2 1/2 ounce) Fuggles or Styrian Goldings hops, 5 percent AA, 1 hour 60 grams (2 ounces) East Kent Goldings hops, 5 percent AA, last 5 minutes of boil This isn’t intended to be a Summer Lightning clone recipe, it’s definitely inspired by it. A crisp, light summer beer that showcases large doses of East Kent Goldings but rather more punchy in the hopping schedule. Success continued in 1996 with a win at the Brewing Industry International Awards for the session beer G.F.B. (Gilbert’s First Brew), claiming Gold Medal both in its class and the overall Championship, beating 232 other cask beers!

After a 90 Minute boil and late additions of Goldings and a Protofloc Tablet, draining the wort into the cube There's a recipe in here, I have this book and it's a very good start on the road to real all grain home brewing. The recipes are simple, as are the processes. Like any hobby, you can make it as complicated as you feel. I try to keep it simple and that works for me. I started off all grain over 12 years ago with a simple bit of kit similar to this. https://www.thehomebrewcompany.co.uk/peco-electric-digital-mashing-bin-boiler-32-litre-p-1993.html The lable refers, front and rear, to this as a 'Golden Ale' instead of 'English Bitter' as in the header info above. It certainly doesn't look like a bitter, though there is significant cross-over in the flavour. Either recipe can be fermented with your favorite ale yeast, although a hop-accentuating strain, such as the one originating from Young's, might be just the thing.

Five of the best hoppy beers

This recipe is mainly US measurements - I'd prefer UK or metric based recipes - Ideally with all easily UK sourceable ingredients too! I want to brew a 5 gal batch - 4 to go in a corny and the other gallon for bottles) This kit which weighs approx 5.1kg comes with Crushed Simpsons Golden Promise, Crushed Grains, Hop Pellets, Copper Fining Tablet and Yeast. Summer Lightning owes a lot to the choice of hops, East Kent Golding. This is a beer that relies on the simplest of recipes, just pale malt and Golding hops. All of my earliest attempts at home brewing used East Kent Goldings as the primary aroma hop. After a few batches I began to love the aroma brought about by adding heavy amounts at the end of the boil. Summer Lightning Inspired Recipe Mashing is a simple infusion mash: 60 minutes at 150 degrees F, mash out at 175 degrees F, then sparge. Boil is an hour, with two hop additions:

Because we use pellets in our beer kit you will require a for the pellets if you have something else that can handle pellets then no need for the bag. As a result of seeing what is in the FV against the time taken to do it (4.5hrs), I am going to up the stakes and go larger to produce at least double the amount. For the sake of an extra hour or, I can double the amount of beer which in turn means I won't need to brew as often (I say that now though! ) All in all was a pretty good brew day. The wort was cooled overnight in the no chill cube. Next day I rehydrated some US-04 yeast, aerated the wort by tipping from the cube to the fermenter and giving a it a vigorous stir, then added the yeast. It’s had 9 days so far at around 18-20C and I’ll bottle when it’s been in the FV for 12-14 days. An English bitter with 100% Maris Otter is going to appear almost as light as most lagers. When I first tasted Summer Lightning however it was recognisably bitter and whilst it appeared so, the taste was not that of European Lager. We celebrated our tenth anniversary with a party for over 400 shareholders and customers, using the event to launch the adventurous Crop Circle, brewed to a complex recipe including malted barley, wheat and maize along with a selection of English and continental hop varieties.

A ‘dry hopped’ beer means the hops were added very late (after boiling) – like a chef adding fresh herbs before serving a dish. Five of the best hoppy beers As the boil finished and the chiller running, we waited until the temperature had dropped to 25c and then transferred to the FV. When it had finished, Garth noticed that the cold break was actually happening in the FV and not the Copper. As neither of us have used an immersion chiller before, we believe that insufficient time was given between the chiller finishing and the transfer to the FV. It could also be down to the boil-over though. As a result I have a lot of crap in the bottom of the FV And it begs for a perfect summer ale--crisp, dry, refreshing, but sturdy enough to satisfy, a lovely citric hop aroma leaps from the dazzling white meringue. Perhaps surprisingly, its innovative taste has been fashioned out of the most traditional of ingredients, Maris Otter pale malt and East Kent Goldings hops.
