About this deal

The rainbow is also a picture of God’s beauty and holiness. Ezekiel 1:28: “Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD.” After the floodwaters receded and Noah could get out of the boat onto dry land, he built an altar and offered a burnt offering to God. In response, God declared this promise to Noah and his family: The rainbow is one of the most beautiful, naturally occurring phenomenons in nature. Scientifically speaking, rainbows appear in the sky when sunlight enters raindrops, causing dispersion and refraction of the light. But rainbows symbolize so much more than just a scientific anomaly.

In his first vision from God, known as the "wheel in the middle of a wheel" vision, the prophet Ezekiel compares the glory of God to a rainbow appearing in a cloud.

The Rainbow Reminds Us of the Gospel

The most luminous color in the rainbow, yellow is known to capture our attention more easily than any other color. (Perhaps this is why the most common highlighter color is yellow!) I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. So the rainbow is not merely a symbol. It’s not simply part of an ancient story. It is a living example of God’s faithfulness. It is an assurance that God has not forgotten us and that he continues to work in this world. The second mention of a rainbow in Revelation occurs when John describes the look of a mighty angel. On the other end of the spectrum, rainbows are popular in the culture of little girls. Rainbow Pony continues to be a popular line of merchandise. In a kindergarten performance celebrating Martin Luther King’s Day, my daughter scampered across the stage with a rainbow painting on a poster board. She said her dream was for there to be “rainbows everywhere.” This is my favorite rainbow recollection, and it reminds me of God’s loving promise to Noah.

Bows appear again in the prophetic book of Revelation, which foretell the end of man's rule on the earth and the coming of Jesus to set up his Kingdom. The first mention in Revelation appears when the apostle John uses it to describe the glory and power of God on his throne. So, what is the true meaning of the rainbow? To answer that question, we must look beyond the children’s coloring books and really weird movies to the Bible — the only truly infallible, inspired, and authoritative source of truth that we have. A mix of purple and blue, indigo is the color of the midnight sky. Because of this, indigo encourages individuals to think more deeply about life and has strong connections to spiritualism and inward thinking. Along the same lines, people have long tried to answer this question: Is indigo blue or purple? The answer: it’s both.(Although, if you want to get more specific, indigo is three-quarters blue and one-quarter purple.)

Interestingly, the human eye is capable of distinguishing more variations of the color green than any color in the rainbow. In Genesis, it is described as a sign of God’s Mercy as well as the pact/covenant He made with Noah that such a flood would not be sent again. In the church, a covenant means members agree to act together in harmony with the precepts of the gospel. A covenant establishes a relationship between two parties, similar to a government document. I have set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall serve as a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth.

After several months of interesting events, God’s judgment was “restrained” and the rain stopped ( Genesis 8:2), resulting in a rainbow that appeared in the sky. Then I saw another strong angel coming down out of heaven, clothed with a cloud, and with a rainbow on his head; and his face was like the sun, and his feet were like pillars of fire (Revelation 10:1). Symbolism of ColorsGod made this covenant with Noah (who represented all future people) regarding His creation. The events of the book of Genesis “introduce us to how God initiates and makes covenants with His chosen people, pledging His love and faithfulness to them and calling them to promise theirs to Him.” But even without religious significance, red is a powerful color with strong emotion. It is a heavily pigmented color which naturally links it to strong feelings and emotions. Red is never used to illustrate weakness or subtlety. Instead, it is used in nearly every country and culture to designate danger or to issue a warning.
