About this deal

Over the course of the book, Phil talks about the sacred he created to infuse practices and games with a sense of the sacred. 6. ONE BREATH = ONE MIND Of course, the author clarifies, it’s not about romantic love and not even brotherly love. What Phil refers to is the emotional connection that ties the warriors together in the heat of battle. Elite coaches and players often talk about valuing the process. Mastering the craft and remaining present. Prepare as best you can and let go of the outcome or result.

Let each player discover their own destiny - don't force your changes on people. Remember players aren't just cogs in a machine, they are people Specifically, he introduced the Bulls’ mindfulness meditation and had the players sit together in silence and breathe together in sync. 7. THE KEY TO SUCCESS IS COMPASSION STAGE 3—focused primarily on individual achievement and driven by the motto “I’m great (and you’re not).” According to the authors, people in organizations at this stage “have to win, and for them winning is personal. They’ll outwork and outthink their competitors on an individual basis. The mood that results is a collection of ‘lone warriors.’” STAGE 3– Focused on individual achievement and a mindset that “I’m great (and you’re not).” The tribe is a tribe of “lone warriors” Thus it was,” The Silmarillion says, “that in two domains the bliss and beauty of the Elves remained still undiminished while that Age endured: in [Rivendell]; and in Lothlórien [...] where the trees bore flowers of gold and no Orc or evil thing dared ever come.”It involves covering teammates’ mistakes and weaknesses and even fouling when necessary to protect a friend. Sometimes, even in a team sport, there's just some individual that beats you, with his talent or with the sheer force of his will. It happens. Phil should know. He coached a couple of guys that were very capable of doing this. Though they were most successful when they bought into the team concept. When they learned to trust their teammates. But you also have to give people the opportunity to express themselves. To find the right balance isn't always easy. Phil knows that as well.

The three Elven rings had been crafted independently of Sauron by the Elf smith Celebrimbor; they were, however, crafted using skills taught by the Dark Lord, subjecting them to the power of the One Ring whilst it remained in Sauron's possession. In the One Ring's absence, after Sauron's first defeat, these rings were wielded by the Elves for purposes of good. Another aspect of Buddhist teachings that has influenced me is the emphasis on openness and freedom. The Zen teacher Shunryu Suzuki likened the mind to a cow in a pasture. If you enclose the cow in a small yard, it will become nervous and frustrated and start eating the neighbor’s grass. But if you give it a large pasture to roam around in, it will be more content and less likely to break loose. For me, this approach to mental discipline has been enormously refreshing, compared to the restricted way of thinking ingrained in me as a child.

As far as Tex was concerned, the genius was in the details, and it didn't matter if you were Michael Jordan or the lowest rookie on the team: Tex would badger you until you got it right. Every year Tex, who loved inspirational sayings, would recite to the team his favorite proverb about the importance of learning the details: Managed Michael Jordan, the greatest player in the world, and got him to embrace selflessness, even if it meant losing a scoring title I can’t pretend to be an expert in leadership theory. But what I do know is that the art of transforming a group of young, ambitious individuals into an integrated championship team is not a mechanistic process. It’s a mysterious juggling act that requires not only a thorough knowledge of the time-honored laws of the game but also an open heart, a clear mind, and a deep curiosity about the ways of the human spirit. We got off to a roaring start, winning twenty-one of our first twenty-five games, and by the time we faced the Celtics at home on Christmas, we were a far more spirited team than we’d been during the previous year’s playoffs. We were playing the game the way the “basketball gods” had ordained: reading defenses on the move and reacting in unison like a finely tuned jazz combo. These new Lakers beat the Celtics handily, 92–83, and then danced through the season to the best record in the Western Conference (65-17).

Bill Russell, the Boston Celtics great who won more championship rings as a player than anyone else (eleven), revealed in his memoir, Second Wind, that he sometimes secretly rooted for the opposing team during big games because if they were doing well, it meant he would have a more heightened experience.” Phil says that it took him years of practice, but eventually the more aware he started to be about what was going on within him, the more he became connected to the world outside. On a deeper level, I believe that focusing on something other than the business at hand can be the most effective way to solve complex problems. When the mind is allowed to relax, inspiration often follows. Research is beginning to prove the point. In a commentary on CNNMoney.com, Fortunesenior writer Anne Fisher reported that scientists have begun to realize “that people may do their best thinking when they are not concentrating on work at all.” She cites studies published in the journal Scienceby Dutch psychologists who concluded, “The unconscious mind is a terrific solver of complex problems when the conscious mind is busy elsewhere or, perhaps better yet, not overtaxed at all.” When we called time-out with twenty-five seconds to go,” he re-called, “we went into the huddle and Phil said, ‘Michael, I want you to take the last shot,’ and Michael said, ‘You know, Phil, I don’t feel comfortable in these situations. So maybe we ought to go in another direction.’ Then Scottie said, ‘You know, Phil, Michael said in his commercial that he’s been asked to do this twenty-six times and he’s failed. So why don’t we go to Steve.”The triangle was hard to play against and to prepare against because, well… Not even the players themselves knew what was going to happen. Depersonalize criticism It’s pretty close to the reasons for their forging in The Rings of Power: Celebrimbor and Elrond sought a solution to the deadly corruption their people faced in Middle-earth. And, as the Silmarillion says, “those who had [an elven Ring] in their keeping could ward off the decays of time and postpone the weariness of the world [...] where they abode there mirth also dwelt and all things were unstained by the griefs of time.” That’s why at the start of every season I always encouraged players to focus on the journey rather than the goal. What matters most is playing the game the right way and having the courage to grow, as human beings as well as basketball players. When you do that, the ring takes care of itself. The most we can hope for is to create the best possible conditions for success, then let go of the outcome. The ride is a lot more fun that way. Men, howeve,r proved much easier to corrupt and control; we all know what a nazgul is. Who keeps the elven rings?

Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success by Phil Jackson | Goodreads

As somebody who grew up in the UK, basketball isn’t a sport I was surrounded by. My husband however is a huge fan and after watching “The last dance” with him and finding it really interesting, I decided that I wanted to learn more about the man who lead the Chicago Bulls to multiple successes. (It’s the entrepreneur in me) One thing that fascinated me about Red was how much of the offense he turned over to the players. He let us design many of the plays and actively sought out our thinking about what moves to make in critical games. Many coaches have a hard time giving over power to their players, but Red listened intently to what the players had to say because he knew we had more intimate knowledge of what was happening on the floor than he did. I love this book. It's a perfect storm in reverse: every good thing about it is enhanced by all the other good things that surround it. Basketball is an action sport, and most people involved in it are high-energy individuals who love to do something— anything—to solve problems. However, there are occasions when the best solution is to do absolutely nothing.

I was also so entertained by his various interactions with superstar players. There were some really touching moments and hilarious ones too (think Shaquille O’Neal unexpectedly bouncing on a tramp with your kids when you come home 😂) Phil says that his approach with Kobe was to be as direct as possible and do so in front of everyone. In fact, in Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, both Gil-galad and Elrond immediately distrusted Annatar, refusing him entry to Lindon. Unfortunately, Celebrimbor was totally down for it. Sauron preyed on the Noldorim elves’ love of Middle-earth, the land they had defended for so long, and their conflicting desire to return to the splendor and bliss of their homeland. The Silmarillion says that he argued, “Wherefore should Middle-earth remain for ever desolate and dark, whereas the Elves could make it as fair as Eressëa, nay even as Valinor?” and encouraged them to devise ways in which to convert and preserve their surroundings. As it turned out, John Lindsay, New York’s mayor at the time, was in Fargo giving a speech at the organization where I was working. Red found the synchronicity of it all amusing. While I signed the contract that day, he said, “Can you imagine? The mayor of New York is here and everybody knows it. And you’re here getting signed and nobody knows it.”
