About this deal

let me preface this by saying that while i did enjoy this, it also suffered the unfortunate fate of being my first read after kingdom of ash. but alice perceives him as a person who possesses everything, essentially the complete opposite of herself.

I wish Henry harbored mutual resentment for Alice rather than immediately being drawn to her — it feels dismissive of her academic capabilities and removes tension from the relationship. While this sort of style works for some people, it's not something I personally resonate with — for the expansive YA genre, I've enjoyed other types of writing more. I really wish we could’ve gotten his POV because I really really want to see what his thoughts were during certain situations! the way he’s always trying to get on alice’s nerves was so adorable ahh the fact they were academic rivals but he has a photo of him and alice on his desk?

Between the gorgeous writing and the incredible class commentary and Henry Li, if I wasn't squealing into my pillow, I was near tears at feeling seen by the Chinese culture and diaspora experience woven throughout. The plot was so easy to get caught up in but also focused heavily on these little moments between the two main characters, who I ended up really liking. Following the ceremony she literally falls into a situation that triggers the power to make her invisible. i don't know what ann liang puts in her books, but i could have read this in one setting if i hadn't stopped myself.

This book is literally the definition of this trope and I’m so freaking in love with it, you guys have NO IDEA! There’s a great moment where she remembers getting second place to Henry in a contest and cried, coz she’d worked really hard to win the RMB500 prize while Henry just entered the contest last-minute on a whim. Liang’s sophomore novel, after her debut If You Could See the Sun, which was one of my favorite releases this year and one of my fa…! this book was just so cute and fun that i am willing to ignore all flaws and plotholes because this book was written for me.i do wish the enemies to lovers part had been played up to a little more, and the magic realism part too, because it wasn’t fully explained in the end what happened ⸺ but oh well. I expected there to be more consequence, or at least more character development as a result of this experience. Both heartfelt and chaotic at the same time, If You Could See the Sun examines privilege, the ability to pursue your dreams, and the desire to be something more. then we have alice who thinks they both hate one another when in reality henry never hated her AHH I LOVED THAT SCENE WHEN HE ADMITTED IT BYE. I remember thinking a month ago about how much I hated him, how I couldn't bear to even be in the same room as him.
