I loved the further exploration of Torak, older now, still dealing with the death of Fa and the connotations he still has surrounding it. It’s similar in that it’s an adventure story, and (I hope) stonkingly exciting. Also, of course, it features Torak, Renn and Wolf. The difference is that this story takes place in the Forest – but it’s a Forest unlike any that we’ve seen in the previous books, as it has been blasted by disaster. Also, where VIPER’S DAUGHTER focussed on Renn’s emotional troubles, SKIN TAKER finds Torak struggling to cope when his beloved Forest is under threat. In " The New Ship", Poppy relives his memories of his first interaction with the Skin-Taker. Wearing a mask, Poppy tied the Skin-Taker to a chair and removed his skin, to avenge all those who had been skinned and killed by him. Although Poppy meant to kill him, the Skin-Taker is an Abyssian and cannot die, so he continued living as a skeleton. It is mentioned that Poppy does not know if the Skin-Taker is aware it was him who skinned him.

That’s after the Ice Age, but before farming spread to Scandinavia – when the land was one vast Forest. This is a first rate magical action/ adventure for older children and younger teens, but I would recommend reading the earlier books in the series first (as I’m looking forward to doing). For that reason, I have recommended this series to parents and children when I worked in a bookstore, and I would love to pass these books on to any children I may have, when they get to the right age.
