I had done a poor translation of this poem in my Old English class and was touched when I figured out the story, feeling the power of every image and the emotion inside the poem. I found it quite strangely that when I read a translation of the poem which puts all the verses into correct modern English grammar, the power of the poem was completely gone.

He draws the Wanderer as it shows its different faces to Earth. These drawings appear in the book. In the next passage, the speaker contrasts the life he used to live with what he’s experiencing now. He once woke to happiness and contentment, but now he’s a “wretched solitary man.” He’d like to return to the life he had and dreams of what it would be like. Ray Anne dipped a manicured hand into her over-sized purse and pulled out her binoculars. She smiled conspiratorially and gave her head a toss. Her short blond hair didn’t move. The first “Anglo-Saxonist” to make those claims about the “Wanderer” had no real evidence to flesh out their speculation. At best it was correlation without cause. They made it up, iow — because the poem is highly enigmatic, riddling even. And these scholars had their needs. Nobody knows _exactly_ what the poem is about. So why be so sure they’re right & I’m wrong? Why get so offended when someone suggests an alternative that might respond more naurally to what we know now, in the Year of Our Guinea Pig Lord 2021? The novel is set in a future a few decades after the mid-1960s, when it was written. The Space Race is still on-going, and while both the USA and the USSR have lunar bases, by Soviets have gained the lead by sending an expedition to Mars.

Paul Hagbolt is escorting Margo Gelhorn (and her cat, Miaow) to observe the lunar eclipse at an observatory in California. Their friend, and Margo's fiance, is Don Merriam, one of the American astronauts at the Moon base. Following on a whim a sign advertising a "flying saucer symposium", Paul and Margo fall in with a group of intellectuals, dreamers, charlatans and misfits. At that point events overtake them. The new planet appears and triggers an earthquake that buries their cars in a landslide. They must avoid tsunamis, more earthquakes, roving mobs and flying saucers to survive. On the Moon Don Merriam is the only astronaut to escape the destruction of the American moonbase. He tries to take off in one of the base's spaceships, only to fall through the Moon itself as it splits asunder under the influence of the new planet. His ship is eventually captured by its crew. The Wanderer’is an Old English poem that’s written in 153 lines. This translated version is in modern English and only reaches 116 lines. As is the case with the vast majority of Anglo-Saxon poetry, these lines are alliterative, meaning that rhythm I based on the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words. There is no rhyme scheme or metrical pattern discernible in the translation. In this particular version, the translator has attempted to keep the stanzas the same length. The majority of them are four-five lines long.

I won’t lie, Dr. Hostetter, you’re hilarious, and I thoroughly enjoy your interpretations and willingness to help everyone with questions, and you’re enthusiasm to standing up for your beliefs. Rule number one of Internets: no one owes you a debate. I have responded in generosity & fairness to every _polite_ commenter & presented alternatives to these musty old critical commonplaces about Old English literature. Instead of making a claim or providing evidence to assrt why I’m wrong, the next commenter makes the exact same statement, in almost the exact same words. That’s not a conversation, that’s a concatenation — and I simply do not have time for it. I give the same response, and I have been given no reason to mediate my response. But I am no longer going to do so. Repeated comments will be moderated out of existence. When there’s a clear tonal distinction, and an existing precedent for Christian modification to Pagan works, I don’t see why you’re resistant to the idea, and I’m curious for why you say this.
