About this deal

I fell in love with those stories, and when I saw Duncton Wood on the “new releases” shelf, I grabbed it. In essence this is a love story between Bracken and Rebecca, but it is also the story of how violence and hatred can be overcome. For example, he frequently switches in a future omniscient voice to emphasize the importance of some even he is about to describe or just has described. Classic fiction from a deeply undervalued Author the Duncton Chronicles are often described as "Lord of the rings meets Watership Down".

But along comes a hero: a young mole named Bracken who leaves to find himself and a way to win his fight against the evil of Rune and Mandrake while winning the paw of his love, Rebecca, Mandrakes daughter. Despite that, I will be on the lookout for the others in this series as I had forgotten how well written they were. With truly identifiable characters that you'll surely come to love and loath, in this tale as old as time, how love conquers, and good can prevail!Similarly, either the writing is strong to convey the drama, suspense, and emotional impact or it isn't. He tried to comfort her but she pulled away, looking at him from a cold and far-off place he knew he could never reach. The Moledom "World" is described with enough clarity to involve the reader - but not so much that it detracts from the story. It is a lovely story for one who enjoys traditional tales of good versus evil and lush, poetic narrative.

As I said, it is like a old sweater made new by the fact that you have changed washing powder brands. This is in fact where Duncton wood always scores over watership down for me, since where watership down has a somewhat impersonal style which often emphasized the animalistic nature of the characters, (I don't want a long explanation of how rabbits can't count up to four when I'm just introduced to a new character), duncton marries the natural and the anthropomorphic flawlessly, where fights for food, territory and mates go hand in hand with very human relationships, despite the fact that the characters are moles. Darker and Edgier: While Duncton Wood had its share of of horror, Duncton Quest brings it up to eleven with the Disciples of The Word's massacre of the Uffington scribemoles. So many memories came flooding back once I started reading, both of the book itself, and the beautiful English countryside. Now in 2017 I'm reading it again and will continue with the rest of the story, its a must read, you will not be disapointed. The first book follows them from life to death, as well as the highs and lows that the Duncton System go through in the meantime. It's the story of two Moles, Bracken and Rebecca, and the adventures they have as they try to protect Duncton Wood from Mandrake an outsider and oddly enough, Rebecca's father. One of my all time favorite books, ever since I first read it as a teenager and just read it again at 45 and I still fell in love with the lives of the moles of Duncton Wood!

If Richard Adams ( Watership Down) and Tolkien wrote a book together (however unlikely that sounds) it might look something like Duncton Wood.Despite being the biggest, and the strongest, he has to destroy any rivals, and religion is a big rival to any dictator, and put himself to replace this. It’s a story of spiritual quest, with all the trials and triumphs of love, greed, courage, oppression and liberty along the way. If you read it from the wrong mindset or point of view, I can see how it might not work as well, but for anyone who still holds out hope for a whimsical, powerful, unquenchable love, this book connects to your inner-most longings and brings them powerfully to life.

On reading this for the first time, it seemed to have been inspired by the popularity of Watership Down by Richard Adams. Beware the Nice Ones: Boswell has no qualms about using the Dark Sound to snap Bracken out of a fit of angst and remind him to respect the secrets of the stone. There were several parts where the characters seemed to be just hanging about waiting for something interesting to happen.

The religion the moles practice hints to me of pagan celtic nature worship, they revere the standing stones, still standing, left by that civilization in the fringes of western Europe and Ireland millennia ago. I also admire Horwood in that his villains and dark events are truly evil, with no shying back from descriptions of truly monstrous actions and feelings by his characters, while his light events are truly light! Bear in mind that as the Dark sound combined with knowledge of the Old Speech can be fatal, this is like snapping someone out of their angst by aiming a loaded gun at them.
