Many story books are a bit more advanced for this age group and many books designed for this age group seem to be centred around non-fiction (in our experience), so we really have enjoyed collecting them all - I will always treasure them as the first stories and series my daughter has been interested in. I studied Drama and French at Bristol University, where I met Malcolm, a guitar-playing medic to whom I’m now married. I really like these books, short and rhyming with lovely illustrations and ‘flaps’ for your little one to faff with and enjoy.

Further books illustrated by Axel include Room on the Broom, Stick Man, Zog and The Smeds and the Smoos – all of which have been made into much-loved animated films by Magic Light Pictures. He is in P1 now and still reaches for these books for a bedtime story, he has almost memoried the words. The angles in particular of the book flaps seem to make them prone to damage, even with supervision.

Given that they are a series for the youngest kiddos, you would think the creators would plan for some rip-proofing or at least rip-reduction in their designs; sadly not. Julia Donaldson is author of many of today’s best-loved picture books including The Gruffalo and Stick Man.

My daughter has thoroughly enjoyed this book and all of the other books in the Tales of Acorn Wood series since she was about 8 months old. I really enjoy getting the children in the audience to help me act out the stories and sing the songs.
