Driverless: Who is in control? is free and open daily from 12 June 2019 until October 2020, with late opening (18.45 to 22.00) on the last Wednesday of each month for Lates . Glyn Morgan, Lead Curator for the exhibition said: ‘Science fiction invites us to observe our own planet and consider our impact upon it. Visitors will see bright futures the genre has imagined and be confronted by some of the biggest threats to our existence – climate change, ecological devastation and nuclear war – as we invite them to consider how often-dystopian imaginings could give us the intellectual and emotional tools to imagine and create more utopian futures.’

Visitors will have the chance to explore three distinctive zones in the exhibition, Land, Air and Water. Each section will explore the different technology solutions already operating in these environments, the motivations of their developers, and their potential to transform a range of activities and industries. Normal postgraduate anxieties and the recent death of his father dredging up memories and feelings of his home in Alabama, a lifestyle and circumstances he is not eager to have to return to, Wallace is already conflicted about whether a PhD in biochemistry is really for him. Driverless: Who is in control? opening today at the Science Museum will explore how close we are to living in a world driven by thinking machines. For me, it is a book that brought up a lot of emotions and gave me plenty to think about. It has some beautiful moments that charmed me with their prose and others that made me uncomfortable but that I will be thinking about for years to come. I would love to hear what you thought of it too.

The Booker Prize-nominated Real Life is a campus novel set over a long weekend in the American mid-west. It follows Wallace, a biochemistry PhD student, and his interactions with his fellow doctoral students and supervisors. Atmosphere closed permanently on 20 March 2022—we will open a new gallery related to climate change in 2024. If material cannot be transported there, you may be able to consult it at the Library and Archives at the National Collections Centre. This will be assessed by our staff on a case-by-case basis, and where access is permitted, you will be offered a Friday visit providing that we have available space and that you agree to abide by our Covid-19 access arrangements.
