About this deal

We have some exciting news. The English author Janice Hallett has a new novel on the way, and if you’ve read The Appeal or The Twyford Code, you’ll know just what a big deal this is. She’s an author who has caught the imagination of crime fiction lovers everywhere, writing cleverly layered mysteries that roll together elements of half-forgotten secrets, true crime, made-up urban myths and a peculiar sense of, well, Englishness that’s definitely amusing but is hard to actually describe.

However, I just found the solution of the case too mundane in an odd way. A lot of coincidences had to pile up to make the story as bizarre as it was, so seeing it all unravelled felt almost underwhelming. Additionally, I didn't really find the solution very realistic in some places. I'm trying to avoid spoilers here - but in such a straightforward plan, why the angels, Gabriel? I wish we had gotten more clear answers there. Also, I didn't like Oliver throughout, but by the end he was really off the rails in the worst way. So for a lot of the middle it felt kind of like a slog to get through, but once the story neared the third act and the narrative was doing the job of wrapping things up I was once again invested.

I loved the format and the whole story felt so authentic. I almost believed there was a real life case of the Alperton Angels. I think the format of the book really added to the authenticity. It’s incredible how the characters can come alive when their stories are told through a mixed-media format but the author manages it expertly.

But anyone who has experienced something life altering, such as a bereavement, can be vulnerable. In simple terms, as soon as someone knows what you want, they can control you with the promise of getting it for you. THAT ENDING. I'm pretty sure my jaw is still hanging on the floor. There was NO WAY I could of guessed the ending but OH HOW IT WORKED.But do you know who I think are the most vulnerable? People who believe they can never be drawn in.”

You must read the documents, then make a decision. Will you destroy them? Or will you take them to the police?" Janice Hallett, the author of The Appeal and The Twyford Code, is on a roll... [A] quirky, clever tale * The Times (Best Books of 2023) * True-crime author Amanda Bailey is attempting to write a book about a twenty year old mysterious case, known as the Alperton Angels. With Angels we have the notes, interviews, texts, news reports and extracts from other playwrights/authors who have all been intrigued by a decades old mystery involving a cult called The Alperton Angels and its ensuing cover up (or not). Now that baby turns eighteen years old and can finally be interviewed. If it can be found, that is. Enter Amanda Bailey, a true-crime author whose flagging career desperately needs a scoop. It is her research the reader will be diving into to try and make sense of this mysterious case, and it is her path the reader follows as she hunts for the truth alongside her rival, Oliver. This is my second Janice Hallett book. While I've read plenty of epistolary works before, this author's trademark is to notch things a bit higher, entangling the reader as deep in the mystery as possible, encouraging them to really root through the clues for the truth. I definitely understand what she's doing - I'm just not sure still if I prefer it!
