The Fantastic Journey (2009) ( PC, Mac, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) What I loved most about using a ‘Where’s Wally’ book to teach grammar was the fact that not only did it provide the class with an exciting context, but it was also so accessible for every child in my class because it contains no words. Each person was able to use noun phrases to describe a character they could see in the book, making for an incredibly effective teaching resource and lesson. Where's Waldo? The Fantastic Journey, known as Where's Wally? The Fantastic Journey in the United Kingdom, [3] is a video game published by Ubisoft and developed by Ludia based on the book of the same name. It is a puzzle adventure game released for the Nintendo DS, Wii, Microsoft Windows, and the iPhone, and is also a remake of The Great Waldo Search, released in 1992. I read this book with my 5-year-old daughter several times and she thoroughly enjoyed finding the clues. They weren't overly difficult for her, but still challenging enough to keep her (and me!) attentive and searching over and over. The only puzzle we encountered difficulty was with The Land of Waldos, the last story in the book. The goal was to find him amongst hundreds of look-a-likes AND find his missing shoe. We did find his shoe, but Waldo himself eludes us constantly!Despite being "an afterthought" to tie Handford's illustrations together, the public responded to the character of Waldo. Handford stated "as it turns out, the fans were more interested in the character than in the crowd scenes." [1] The success of the book and character led to more than 7 subsequent Waldo book by Handford - along with numerous additional publications, an animated television show, an internationally syndicated comic strip and countless other merchandise and spin-off productions. Two video game adaptations of this book were released. The first one was The Great Waldo Search, which was released in 1992 for the NES, SNES and the Sega Genesis. The second is a remake titled Where's Waldo? The Fantastic Journey, which was released on iOS, Microsoft Windows, Wii and Nintendo DS almost two decades later in 2009. The latter takes advantage of pointer-based motion controls to provide a more intuitive experience in searching for targets, and includes a two-player versus mode for family-friendly competition. When Handford first designed his leading man, he named him Wally - a shortened formed of Walter or Wallace but commonly used in Britain as a slang term for a somewhat spacey person. However the American publishers of the books felt the name would not resonate with the North American readers; so when the book was finally published there in 1987, the character was renamed Waldo (different name changes worldwide were made in other countries, such as Charlie for France and Walter for Germany, see the table below).
