About this deal

Absolutely brilliant. Both my kids loved them and it gave them both the confidence on holiday they needed, plus made us feel so much happier knowing they were wearing them around the water - especially the 17moth old' It provides fixed buoyancy and encourages a natural swimming position, helping young children get comfortable and confident using their arms and legs to move around in the water. In the UK dragonflies reach a length of about 85 mm and a wingspan of about 120 mm. This is the size for the larger “Hawker” dragonflies such as the Emperor and Brown Hawker. Damselflies, which are the much smaller and weaker flying relatives of dragonflies, are much smaller. The largest in the UK are the Demoiselles. These have a body length of about 50 mm and a wingspan of about 60 mm.

You might see a dragonfly dipping half their body into water. This is a female dragonfly laying her eggs. Eggs take about to week to hatch into nymphs. TheWildlife Trusts is a movement made up of 46 Wildlife Trusts: independent charities with a shared mission. The nymphs look like mini adults without wings. You’re unlikely to spot them as they live underwater.National safety standards such as BS EN 13138-3:2007 in the United Kingdom require inflatable armbands to conform to certain standards, like puncture resistance and the level of buoyancy retained after a period of time beyond the inflation valve being opened and left open. This is an assessment of the efficiency of non-return valves designed to prevent the armbands from deflating suddenly if an inflation valve comes open. Standards also require prominent labelling near the inflation valves stating that inflatable armbands are not life preservers and should only be used under competent supervision. Supervisors should be in the water within an arm's reach of the person wearing inflatable armbands. Just love this swim vest! The sizing is perfect for my daughter and helps her in the water without being restrictive at all. Would highly recommend!'

Caddisfly larvae live underwater, where they make cases by spinning together stones, sand, leaves and twigs with a silk they secrete from glands around the mouth. Most larvae live in these shelters, which can either be fixed or transportable, though a few species are free-swimming and only construct shelters when they’re ready to pupate.

Inflatable armbands, usually referred to as simply armbands, water wings, swimmies, or floaties, are swim aids designed to help a wearer float in water and learn to swim. [1] Water Wings Swim School has been a member since 1988 of the United States Swim School Association. This trade organization is for operators of swim schools. The Water Wings Swim school believes having fun is the best way to learn how to swim. A child who enjoys swimming will be more willing to learn how to do it safely. They spend about a week feeding away from the water, becoming more colourful as they reach adulthood. During egg-laying, male damselflies, chasers, skimmers and darters guard the females with which they have just mated, either by staying linked ‘in tandem’ or by flying in close attendance. Some female damselflies submerge completely to lay their eggs, often using their still-attached partner to pull them up again afterwards. All dragonfly larvae have six legs (as do adults), wing-sheaths, an extendable hinged jaw (labium) that can shoot out in an instant and catch prey. Prey includes insect larvae, crustaceans, worms, snails, leeches, tadpoles and small fish. Dragonfly larvae themselves can fall victim to predators, including other dragonfly larvae, fish and waterfowl. In prehistoric times dragonflies were much larger, the largest flying insects ever. The largest member of the extinct Protodonata was the Permian Meganeuropsis permianawith a reconstructed wingspan (based on fragments, scaled to complete fossils of similar animals) of about 70-75 cm.

Once nymphs are fully grown, they crawl out of the water and shed one final time. They emerge as young dragonflies, then wait an hour or so until their wings harden and they can fly. Until their wings harden they are extremely vulnerable to predators. I have a pond but cannot seem to get dragonflies and damselflies to live in it – is there anything I can do to encourage them to use it?

Dragonfly larvae

Dragonflies spend most of their lives in their larval stage. During its time the dragonfly catches and eats live prey at every opportunity, moulting a further 5–14 times until it is fully-grown. Larval development typically takes one or two years, but ranges from 2–3 months (emerald damselflies) to more than five years (Golden-ringed Dragonfly). Development takes longer in cooler waters where food is scarcer, whilst in warm waters there may be a new generation every year. Female dragonflies can lay hundreds of eggs during their adult lives, in batches over a few days or even weeks. Mainly, adult dragonflies eat other flying insects, particularly midges and mosquitoes. They also will take butterflies, moths and smaller dragonflies. There is one Asian species which takes spiders from their webs!
