Charmaz's iteration of the constant comparative method was used during data analysis [ 27]. This involved coding of interview transcripts, detailed memo writing and drawing diagrams. The transcripts were analysed as soon as possible after each interview. Coding and interpretation of data was conducted by AS, a trained researcher with PhD and experience of qualitative research and grounded theory methodology [ 28]. Team meetings were held where AS, GGA and ECR discussed data analysis findings and compared their interpretations. The design of this study was based on an established systematic methodology: grounded theory procedures [ 27]. Grounded theory uses a methodically applied set of processes to generate rather than test theory [ 28]. According to grounded theory procedures, questions are asked in an ‘open’ way: participants’ points of view are sought at commencement rather than questions being asked to examine pre-existing hypothesis or theories [ 27, 28].
