About this deal

Small Batch Bourbon is made from select corn, rye, and barley blended to create a unique high-rye mash bill. Although the specifics of the mash bill were never fully disclosed, the potent spiciness both on the nose and tongue is proof enough that there must be at least 25 percent rye in it. The bottle used to carry an 8-year age statement, but they have since dropped it in 2013. We’re guessing that this is because they might be using younger bourbons in the spirit (about four to six years old). Simply add one sugar cube or ½ tsp. sugar, two dashes of Angostura bitters and garnish with a lemon or orange twist in a sturdy Old Fashioned glass to complete.

Having worked in hospitality for more than a decade, I have found that certain spirit drinkers tend to be brand-loyal to a fault. Vodka drinkers are like that, and often scotch drinkers as well. I’ve seen people who won’t drink at all rather than try a vodka other than Grey Goose! Bourbon drinkers, on the other hand, tend to be as much brand-loyal as they are adventurous. I don’t presume many of these types of folks read Malt, but I’ll say it anyway: Some of you saw the top honors awarded to this whiskey and rushed out to secure a bottle at a significant markup, either from the secondary market or from a wily retailer. On the other hand, I made a brief mental note of the plaudits and (as I had been itching to review 1792 anyway) bided my time until a fairly-priced bottle presented itself. I was therefore able to buy and try this without the exertion of hunting it down or the cost of enriching a flipper. This “Full Proof” bourbon is bottled at barrel entry proof of 125 (62.5% ABV), but it’s worth remembering that this means it has been proofed down to a standard strength through the addition of water, as evaporation will typically cause bourbon barrels to rise in strength over time. With all that in mind, let’s taste someone’s idea of the World Whisky of the Year! 1792 Full Proof – Review It’s easy to get lost down the rabbit hole of Bourbon technicalities and terminologies. For the sake of focusing on the important bits – which Bourbon we recommend buying or drinking for every occasion – you’ll find the common terminology further down. Terminology: The terms to know when talking about BourbonThe next step differentiates Bourbon from whiskey. The mixture is pumped into a fermentation vat with yeast and, commonly, a sour mash mix. The mash is then distilled – mostly twice – to remove impurities and increase the strength of the liquid.

The Sazerac Company has not formally released the official mash bill of 1792 Bourbon Full Proof. However, many bourbon whiskey experts have surmised the ingredients by percentage to be around 74% corn, 18% rye, and 8% barley. 1792 Full Proof is aged in American white oak barrels for anywhere from 7 to 8 years and completes its aging process with a 125 proof point rating. The high proof rating places this bourbon in the upper echelons of high proof bourbons with an ABV of 55%-65%. Four Roses Single Barrel: Overall best bourbon of 2023 Before the process is started, a distiller must first determine the mash bill: the exact makeup of grains from which the whiskey is made. To qualify as Bourbon, the grains must feature at least 51% corn. Then, a combination of rye, wheat, and malted barley can also be added.

The distillery also produces arguably one of the worst bourbons.

Small Batch Bourbon is the modern / recent replacement for the Ridgemont Reserve we looked at yesterday. Like the 1792 RR, the 1792 Small Batch Bourbon is made in Bardstown by the Barton 1792 distillery and is made using the same mashbill as the Very Old Barton brand. Of the VOB releases I’ve only tasted the current Very Old Barton 6 and an older release of the Very Old Barton 6 Years bonded. If you are a traditional bourbon drinker, you may be disappointed by the 1792 Small Batch Bourbon. That’s because of the spicy element that comes along with the high rye mash bill. But, if you’re one of those adventurous bourbon drinkers who like to see what people are doing – whether it’s traditional or experimental – this is a bourbon for you.
