About this deal

I would recommend this genuinely enjoyable book to anyone interested in an actor’s life, as well as those obsessed with a certain television and now film period drama.

And be aware, as it does discuss bits of his personal life there are issues that could be upsetting: the death of his parents and a brother, how he and his wife had miscarriages before the birth of their son, etc. With that, Hugh Bonneville stepped out from the shadows and became the man we needed without knowing we needed him. MacKay, so believable as a plummy soldier entering hell in the film 1917, is less convincing at the other end of the class spectrum, with an affected accent and persona so jarringly misjudged, I almost questioned if that was the point (a brief aside from another character about others having less than him and what he thinks he has, suggested maybe, but if so, it needed another beat to work). From a hilarious race against time to a moment of unexpected eavesdropping, from righting wrongs in rural India to finding joy in unlikely places, these stories are all rich in wit and humour, guaranteed to lift your spirits and warm your heart. Subtitled “From Downton to Darkest Peru” which neatly sums up the two roles he is probably best known for in recent years, this likable and witty account of his life has its very funny moments which can quickly switch to a moving comment on a fellow actor who died too soon (Emma Chambers).

Dahl is affectionately played by Hugh Bonneville, and inevitably makes Dahl more attractive and personable than was the case. Hugh had his air-pods in as he was spotted on the tube at Leicester Square station, before heading down the escalator and out into the street. I imagine it will end up in the bargain bin soon enough and/or it should be available at your local library if you're just casually interested. The film suggests the family were brought closer together by this catastrophe, resulting in Neal gaining new emotional intelligence for her acting and Dahl being able to accept creative comments on his work from his family, and so getting crucial improvements for his 1964 hit Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. After one day even the teacher wonders whether there is anything he can teach a certain bear from Darkest Peru.Hugh’s school life was not a series of acting experiences, but he admits to becoming very pretentious in his pursuit of the theory of acting. Then later, when Neal meets Newman (Sam Heughan), he coolly declines to engage in the ashen-faced condolences. There is plenty of name dropping throughout, with stories and anecdotes from some of his showbiz acquaintances filling the pages.
