About this deal

Seaweed has long been used as a soil improver, thanks to its natural content of nitrogen, potassium and phosphates. Endorsed by the Royal Horticultural Society, this liquid seaweed stimulant from Plantworks contains organic seaweed extract that improves plant development by increasing chlorophyll production. The feed also contains extra iron from sustainably harvested kelp extract. Certain versatile lawn feeds can be used for different functions depending on when they’re applied: for example, when applied between September and November the Miracle-Gro EverGreen Premium Plus Lawn Food restores the lawn after the harsh summer and prepares it for the stresses of winter. Similarly, applying it in March helps negate the damaging effects of a cold winter. If you do decide to get rid of the weeds first, then you can also use a ‘spot’ weed killer meaning you’ll only treat the broad leaf species. When & How often to use weed and feed on the grass For the best results, MOOWY claims this fertiliser should be used regularly every six to eight weeks, along with mowing your lawn every week. That said, the high nitrogen content makes us a little cautious when using this product on young or recently sown lawns.

If you are looking for a product with more nutrients than what is found in regular turf builders but less active ingredients such as herbicides then we would suggest Organic Lawn Care Starter Kit that contains soil conditioner, organic fertilizers like fishmeal and kelp extractions as well as suppressant products like corn gluten meal. It provides all-natural feeding for your grass without harming beneficial organisms that live on your lawn. For a more hands-on approach, you can use a spray bottle or pump-up sprayer filled with liquid weed and feed solution mixed according to label directions (more on that in just a minute). A general rule of thumb is for every square foot of lawn area, mix one quart of concentrated liquid weed and feed product per gallon of water. Apply at least once monthly during periods when plants are actively growing. Some of the best lawn feeds are those which are designed with slow-release formulas, working in different phases to continue improving the health of the lawn for weeks after application. The Scotts Lawn Builder Lawn Food starts to revitalise the lawn in around seven days, then continues slowly releasing nutrients for eight weeks. In this article, I’m going through all the pros and cons of using weed and feed on the lawn. I’ll explain the benefits of weeding then feeding rather than using an all-in-one granule feed. I’ll even suggest some organic alternatives to man-made pesticides.

Conditions for feeding a lawn

If you crave a beautiful lawn filled with lush green grass, then you need to remove the weed. However, manual weeding is an exhausting job, and the result isn’t always satisfactory. There is an easier and more effective solution. The formula contains no phosphorus, and has an NK ratio of 14-5 meaning it’s high in nitrogen, with a reasonable amount of potassium too.

The answer depends on your fertilizing needs. The average lot size of a residential lawn is about half an acre, which means you will need approximately 20 to 30 gallons of liquid fertilizer and weed killer mixture for application. What weeds will Scotts Weed and Feed kill? It doesn’t contain anything specific to combat weeds, so if killing weeds alongside refreshing the lawn is a priority, this may not be the best lawn feed for that purpose. However, healthier lawns in general do stay more resistant to both weeds and moss. Its selective nature ensures that it only affects the weeds it targets. Which means the other grasses and vegetations would be unaffected and remain alive. By far the best way for avoiding the need to use herbicides is by staying on top of the lawn itself. Applying regular lawn feeds at intervals during the year will help minimise weeds out-competing your grass. The NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) ratio is 6-9-6, and the high phosphorus content is what helps this product better promote the health of germinating seeds compared to other lawn feeds. Nitrogen is responsible for leaf growth, and potassium encourages plants to grow and function correctly.

In terms of moss, within two weeks of applying the product, the moss will have died and be ready to rake. As with all moss killers, this may result in some sparse patches directly after raking; however, grass will soon spread into bare areas. To find out how to water the lawn correctly please visit Watering the Lawn. When to use Liquid Fertiliser That said, it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to have a supply of both. That way, you can apply lawn feed + weed killer twice a year, but keep the grass topped up with lawn feed the rest of the time. Choosing Liquid or Granular Formulas If you’re looking for a lawn fertiliser that also does a great job at eliminating pesky weeds and moss, go with Guard-en-Force. A kilo of this stuff will cover (and get rid of) around 500 square metres of moss.
