If you’ve been around pediatric occupational therapy or speech therapy for any length of time, then you’ve probably heard of the Z-Vibe. It’s awesome! I’m a pediatric therapist and my son always has a resting open mouth. Already seeing a difference with all the things OT is telling to do.

The Z-Vibe is available in two different versions: plastic (all of the color options) or metal (aluminum). The plastic optionsare sturdy, affordable, easy-to-clean, and colorfully kid-friendly. The aluminum option has slightly more weight to it, and the metal is cool to the touch. Tongue Tip - This tip can be used as a traditional tongue scraper to help establish good oral care. It can also be used to help establish the concept of tongue lateralization and elevation (hold the Tongue Tip vertically in front of the mouth and ask the individual to put the tip of their tongue inside the hole, then guide the tongue from side to side or up and down). You can also place the Tongue Tip flat on top of the tongue to provide input to a large surface area of the tongue (this tip has the largest "footprint" surface-area-wise). My goal with this post is to walk you through the basics of some of ARK’s most popular oral motor products and highlight additional resources that will give you some helpful pointers for how to use each of these tools with the children in your life.

There are over 35 different tip attachments for the Z-Vibe®. The Z-Vibe comes standard with the original and still most popular Probe Tip. However, we also make a variety of other tips to work on more specific targeted goals. All of the tip attachments are interchangeable and compatible with any Z-Vibe® or Z-Grabber®. From spoons to toothbrushes to pencils and more, the same handle can shift goals simply by switching out one tip for another. The pencil adapter screws into the Z-Vibe® like every other tip, and the pencils fit nicely into the adapter.

Lobe this for my son who’s currently in eating therapy. It is helping de-sensitize the sides of his mouth to encourage chewing. Recommended by our speech/eating therapist. When used with the Pen, Pencil, or Crayon Tips, the Z-Vibe becomes the Tran-Quill® Pen/Pencil/Crayon - an excellent tool for sensory motor needs. The vibration increases focus and attention while working on handwriting, homework, and other writing tasks, but does not affect the actual writing. Most of us are either visual or auditory learners. But when these two senses are not enough, you may need to physically direct the articulators for certain speech and feeding skills. ARK's Z-Vibe® is anideal toolto help you do so. Therapists (and trained caregivers) can use it to provide targeted tactile cues within the oral cavity to teach tongue elevation, tongue lateralization, lip closure, rotary chewing, and much more. For example, use the Z-Vibe® to apply gentle pressure to the alveolar ridge (just behind the upper front teeth). Then remove the Z-Vibe® and instruct the individual to touch the same spot with his/her tongue tip. You can also follow up by prompting the individual to say the tongue tipsounds /t/d/n/l/.If someone does chew through things, it’s possible they may need the toughest XXT level eventually. XXT is super firm, though, so we don't always recommend getting it right off the bat (some people find it uncomfortable chewing on something that firm). Texture aversion: Children who have difficulty with feeding can have texture aversions which limit their ability to eat a variety of foods. A Z-vibe can have a variety of textured heads that are interchangeable to provide different sensations and textures that the child will learn to tolerate and over time will assist with helping a child tolerate different food textures. When using the Z-Vibe or Z-Grabber Handle, twist the switch tip *just* until it starts to vibrate. Any further twisting will not increase the vibration. Significant over-tightening is hard to do, but it may damage the motor and affect the performance of the handle. XXT / Super Firm - this is the toughest level, which we call XXT ("Xtra Xtra Tough"); It still has some “chewability” to it, but it’s fairly rigid / pretty firm Use the Brush Tips for gentle gum massage and teeth cleaning and to transition individuals into the eventual use of a regular toothbrush. The Tongue Tipcan also be used as a tongue scraper for dental care with the Z-Vibe.

ARK's Z-Vibe® is a vibratory oral motor tool that can help build oral tone and improve a variety of speech, feeding, and sensory skills. Use it to provide a varied sensory experience and/or to provide targeted tactile cues within the oral cavity. Its gentle vibration provides a new level of sensory stimulation to increase oral focus and draw more attention to the lips, tongue, cheeks, and jaw. Vibration can also be very calming, soothing, and organising. If you are interested in learning more about the development of mouth, feeding, and speech skills, here are a few suggestions: The Spoon Tip was specially designed by feeding therapist Debbie Lowsky, MS, CCC-SLP to support easy feeding and food removal. The size and shape of the spoon bowl are "just right" - big enough to hold an appropriate amount of food, but small enough to prevent the spoon from being overloaded with too much food.
