Her second novel, Crosshairs, made the CBC’s Best Canadian Fiction list and was named one of NOW magazine’s 10 Best Books, an Audible Best Audiobook and an NBC 20 Best LGBTQ Book. Her most recent novel, The Story of Us, was shortlisted for the Forest of Reading Evergreen Award and longlisted for a Toronto Book Award. Catherine Hernandez is also a playwright and the author of the children’s books M Is for Mustache: A Pride ABC Book, I Promise and Where Do Your Feelings Live? She lives outside Toronto. Duration 9:01 Featured Video‘Scarborough’ is based on a book by Catherine Hernandez. It's an unvarnished look into the lives of three children growing up around poverty, abuse and homelessness. Our Toronto’s host Marivel Taruc spoke with the writer, director, and the three young actors. The thing is, when I’ve recently tried to imagine what society might look like, I haven’t really been picturing this: I would recommend The Story of Us, I would warn that there is some triggering content. Read with care. This was such an interesting and educational read. The story is told from the perspective of a newborn baby and recounts the story of his mother’s life from the Philippines to Hong Kong and later to Canada.

gifting for good

Maybe, while doting over the miniature edges of my fingernails, you caught a glimpse of me, the true me, the past me. Maybe you watched me sleep in my first 24 hours and you wondered at my expressions, the frowns, the smiles, the knitting brow, wondered how I could be anxious when surely I had never experienced anything but my mother's heartbeat and the warmth of her womb. Maybe you had a sense there was more that I knew. But as days pass, you've noticed this less. That is why I need you to listen. The former me, the real me, is fading by the second and there are things I remember, at this very moment and never will again, that I need to share with you.

When I told people I was planning to write a post about society, and the way people are acting, and the way the media is acting, and the way the government is acting, and the way everyone else is acting, people kept saying the same thing to me.I liked that I had absolutely no idea where the story would go, I like to be surprised and I really was, I didn’t expect any of what I read, and it was moving and heartbreaking and wonderful all at the same time. I felt so many emotions reading this book, and Dani Atkins is such a talented writer to be able to stir up and bring out all of these feelings in her characters and her readers too. The Story Of Us is so BEAUTIFULLY written, wow. It turns out I had a lot more to say about what was going on around me than I had anticipated. Soon, my draft of Chapter 11 was longer than the first ten chapters combined. I have problems. This was a beautiful and heartbreaking collection of experiences that the MC has throughout her life as a nanny and then a Personal Support Worker. The stories we see and the people we meet through her experiences were a collection of personalities that we might see every day on our commute in the city, or that we might know of in passing or through friends and family. It was such a diverse number of experiences that while one might have had you despairing for the MC's experiences, another might restore a bit of the hope one can't help but have in such a situation. In a few decades, a torrent of new evidence and ideas about human evolution has allowed scientists to piece together a more detailed understanding of what went on thousands and even millions of years ago. We now know much more about the problems our ancestors faced, the solutions they found, and the trade-offs they made. The drama of their experiences led to the humans we are today: an animal that relies on a complex culture. We are a species that can DL and does DL rapidly evolve cultural solutions as we face new problems, but the intricacies of our cultures mean that this often creates new challenges. Sure, they've both written about abusive relationships (Caletti's Stay and Dessen's Dreamland, but their styles are so different. Caletti always surprises me with whatever she comes up with, and her writing, or at least my opinion of her writing, is hit or miss depending on the book. She's more like that annoying kid in your AP English class who doesn't always answer questions correctly, but once in a while comes up with some splendid, mind-blowing revelation about a theme or motif or something.
