I already have a Kodak Ektar film simulation recipe that I published a little over two years ago, but I’ve been wanting to revisit it for awhile. In the article that I published for that recipe, I wrote, “I’m actually a little hesitant to call this film simulation recipe Kodak Ektar 100 because it’s not quite right. It’s close, but a little off. The color palette is slightly askew.” That’s a true statement. My original Ektar recipe is close but no cigar. Since that time Fujifilm has added more JPEG options to their cameras, so would it be possible to get closer to real Ektar on my X100V? Now the grain can show up if you push the film and also if you edit it too much. You won’t notice it much in general use. As a color-negative film it’s one of the closest contenders to the punchiness of old slide film. The benefit of Ektar over these being the natural circumvention of the inconvenient and costly processing that slide film requires. Take Ektar to your local lab and they’ll have your prints ready in no time, as it uses C-41 process chemicals (the standard stuff used in every lab these days). When Kodak first launched into development of Ektar, the brand set out to create a film that would turn any scene into a vivid feast of color and clarity in the same way that their earlier slide films had done. Happily, they succeeded. Load a roll of Ektar, set your camera’s ISO to box speed (100) and shoot. Without much fuss you’ll be making images you’re proud of.

My Experiences with Kodak Ektar 100 - Casual Photophile

So much depends on the camera, plus how it is shot, developed and scanned or printed. One film can vary wildly. Kodak Ektar 100 is a pretty beautiful film. It’s best used in the old school way of doing photography: with a camera on a tripod, a special light meter used to judge the highlights and shadows, and then a single very care and calculated exposure being made. It delivers very saturated colors that I’m sure many digital photographers will really like–especially if you’re a Sony shooter. This is the state that I found myself in when I began to look beyond the drugstore shelves, scrolling through the B&H film selection. There are so many to choose from it can be overwhelming. I’d like to share my thoughts on films that I have recently shot myself in hopes of helping someone make the decision as to which one to try next. Having 5 rolls of this film now under my belt, it seemed like a good place to start. So first up: Ektar.. What Is Ektar 100? Price: 3 out of 10. Its expensive, and it really does limit how useful this film is. For a 100 speed film, there are many slower films out there that provide great results for not quite as much money. It performs best when shot at the box speed of ISO 100 and does perform slightly better overexposed than underexposed. The images that are underexposed tend to render muddy colors and overexposed images tend to look slightly washed out.

Alternatives to Kodak Ektar 100

In short, I can’t really argue with what they promise. The shot of Shanghai Library in particular shows off the sharpness, especially in the windows on the right-hand side of the tower, and also that grain. World’s finest? I don’t know. Very fine? For sure.

And now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s get to the good stuff. Though naturally an entirely subjective statement, I have to profess that Ektar could be a perfect color film. I just can’t get enough of this film. I love it for its punchy colors, its incredible detail, and its ease of use. If I’m shooting color, I’m shooting Ektar – that is, if the light permits.So if you are shooting this Pro Image and aren’t sure of your metering, maybe aim for a little underexposed. It sounds like it’ll handle that better and will lessen the chances of your images being overexposed.
