About this deal

It is very easy to read and a great story, both from the point of view of the “lost things” and also from the way the lives of the characters in the book develop. It isn’t revealed how this narrative connects with Laura’s until the end, but it does and in a very satisfying way. Throw in a small little love story, a wonderful neighbor Sunshine, a girl with disabilities, and you have such a heartwarming story. All Laura needs is the help from a plucky neighborhood girl and a conveniently handsome gardener and miracles can happen!

I think these minor deviations from reality were unnecessary and, for me, detracted from the perfection of the book. In The Keeper of Lost Things, debut novelist Ruth Hogan ties together the lives of her characters and the objects they discover. The primary storyline is modern day and revolves around Laura, an assistant to aging author Anthony Peardew. The final pages of The Keeper of Lost Things manage to bring all of the plot threads together quite neatly, perhaps a little too neatly for some readers. At first, it was somewhat confusing to listen to, as the POVs and storylines change with each chapter. In fact, Sunshine just seems to know a lot of things about Therese and also about the owners of the lost things. It invites curiosity about the characters and subject matter, dazzles with ironic observations, extends empathy to even the most unlikeable human beings, and gives dog-lovers a literary outing. Charming and endlessly endearing, Hogan’s novel of a collector of lost objects and his determined mission to reunite them with their owners is a feel-good tale about atonement, affection and doing the right thing. It was endearing and brought a big smile to my face as I turned the last page and read the last word. My only criticism is that there are a few instances of curious things happening and these are never explained.

But there is also another interweaving story line - Eunice, who has lost something and lost the love of her life (literally). I felt inspired after reading this novel and found this a comfortable, feel good read that left me thinking how those little things in life could actually be more consequential than one might think. Excerpt from an interview with Ruth Hogan for those of us who like to know the inspiration for a story and just a teeny bit more: The Keeper Of Lost Things began with a single sentence that came into my head on a train journey and that sentence eventually became the first line of the novel. We agreed, however, that reading is best done in bigger chunks of time than half an hour before bed; that reading is highly important to us however we do it, especially as now (being mostly a retired community) we have more time to concentrate on it; and that a reading group has the advantage of presenting us with books we might not have chosen for ourselves, thus opening up new windows onto the world. When Anthony dies he leaves both his estate and the responsibility for completing his life’s work to Laura, his housekeeper/secretary.The beginning of this novel was kind of enchanting, but as my reading progressed my interest took a turn, and by the end I read with a constant cringing of my toes. But working for Anthony has started to give the meaning which she adores; helping him with day to day living and dealing with his paper work.
