In an introductory essay, Mark Sinclair, deputy editor of Creative Review, provides an overview of how typography has evolved from the early “type only”experiments of the Dadaists and Futurists, via Modernism and Post-Modernism, to today’s radical typographic trends, digitally made and shared instantly on the internet. The Art of Zentangle Yolanda Andrés (@yolandandres) grew up in a town surrounded by friends and family with the women in her life. But she hung up the thimble to dedicate herself to graphic design and advertising until in 2008, when her daughter was born prematurely, she began to accompany the long hours in the hospital with the thread and needle. So what she started as a way to abstract herself, stop counting hours and relax became her job. Now she is an artistic embroiderer who has worked for large brands and institutions such as Hermès, Museo Thyssen or Carolina Herrera.

From the Publisher.Expressive lettering and illustrated words: here is a kaleidoscope of highly animated text and type from a broad spectrum of styles and effects. Garfield takes a lighthearted approach to the historical aspects of typefaces, which is immensely helpful to beginners & type nerds alike. He also examines our reactions to fonts, which was the most important part of the book for me. It’s one thing to learn about the rules of typography and what makes excellent form; it’s another thing to learn about how people can react to it since that has a direct relation to how well a font may perform for the designer. Having insight into how people may react and the feeling that the font imparts are crucial to the design and execution process. Being able to predict reactions helps to make decisions with the font design, as well. As I’m sure many font designers will attest, there are multiple versions and revisions of every single letterform before the final version is settled upon! Comics are one of the most popular forms of illustration. There are over 700 illustrations from top artists in this sketchbook! You are able to see how the ideas are brainstormed and developed.
