About this deal

Smoke alarms are self-contained devices that incorporate a means of detecting a fire (smoke detector) and giving a warning (alarm), usually a very loud beeping sound. They are about the size of a hand and are normally fitted to the ceiling. They can detect fires in their early stages and give you those precious minutes to enable you and your family to leave your house in safety. What type of smoke alarms are available? An aspirating smoke detector (ASD) or 'Sniffer Unit' is a system often used in fire protection. An ASD system consists of one central detection unit which will draw air through numerous pipes to detect carbon/smoke. Take a look at our best smoke alarms to discover the models that Which? recommends, including smoke alarms that meet the requirements of the new smoke and heat alarms laws in Scotland. What are the right smoke alarms and heat alarms for each room?

Some people find their alarms are frequently set off when they are cooking or when the toast burns. An alarm installed inside the kitchen must be a heat alarm rather than a smoke alarm. Just outside a kitchen (eg in hall or dining room) an optical smoke alarm or, even better, a combined smoke and heat alarm should be installed, as these are less sensitive to false alarm. This could be critical if you’re out when there’s a fire. All of the smart smoke alarms we've tested are optical models. Turn off and unplug electrical appliances unless they are designed to be left on – like your freezer.

Interlinked smoke alarms could be a real advantage when there's a fire. These have become a requirement for all homes in Scotland since February 2022. If one alarm detects smoke, all the alarms sound. Installation takes less than five minutes and when you need to take your smoke alarm down to change the battery, simply peel it off. Smoke alarms require very little maintenance but according to the Fire Service, there are a couple of things you should do every year to make sure they're working properly: If you can’t open the window break the glass in the bottom corner. Make jagged edges safe with a towel or blanket. What to do if your clothes catch fireAll of the major manufacturers (Aico, FireAngel and Kidde) make smoke and heat alarms that will work in combination with one another and we have tested pairs of smoke and heat alarms from each of them. In Scotland, since February 2022, interlinked smoke and heat alarms have needed to be fitted in all homes.

Some smart models sound an alarm on your smartphone and through the alarm itself when triggered – this is the most helpful kind of smart alarm.

It is easy to get confused in smoke, so count how many doors you need to go through to reach the stairs. Optical: These are more expensive but more effective at detecting larger particles of smoke produced by slow-burning fires, such as smouldering foam-filled upholstery and overheated PVC wiring. They are marginally less sensitive to fast flaming fires. Optical alarms can be installed near (not in) kitchens, as they are less likely than ionisation alarms to go off when toast is burned. For the minimum level of protection, you need at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home. But a smoke alarm in every room (apart from the bathroom) will provide the greatest level of protection. Combined Optical Smoke and Heat Alarms: Combinations of optical and heat alarms in one unit to reduce false alarms while increasing the speed of detection.
