About this deal

The mower powered through grass which was a good 5 inches tall and the rear discharge worked perfectly, leaving the cuttings on the ground.

This Mountfield mower is powered by a 100cc overhead valve engine which is easy to start and economical to run. Self-Propelled In this Mountfield SP41 Petrol lawn mower review, we’re going to take a look at one of Mountfield’s most popular models. You’ll also see why I think it’s a contender for the best petrol mower for smaller lawns. Short Mountfield SP41 Review As I said earlier, topping it up with oil and fuel is also very easy as the filler caps are on top of the engine. The Mountfield SP51H is a tough, dependable and easy to use a stylish mower. Self-propelled with power to the rear wheels, there is no need to push, making this an ideal mower for maintaining your lawn with minimal effort, especially if it has slopes. Powered by an industry leading 145cc Honda OHV Autochoke engine, it has a 51cm cutting width and 6 cutting heights ranging from 22-80mm. It is also fitted with a cone clutch transmission (DSC) for smooth acceleration. The SP51H has a deep drawn pressed steel chassis giving superior strength and collecting ability. Setting the mowing height is dead easy. The lever is on the rear right wheel as you stand behind it. Selecting one of the five height settings is very smooth with no catching or jamming. All lawnmowers have a cutting width, and that can range in size from as low as 30cm (12") up to around 53 cm(21") That said, if you simply want to get the job done and you’re not fussed about stripes, ignore this criticism.

Firstly, if you like a striped finish to your lawn when you have cut the grass, this won’t do it because it doesn’t have a rear roller, just wheels. The Mountfield SP51H Petrol Lawnmower has been equipped with self-propulsion, so will prove a real boon if your lawn’s on a slope, or has sections of rough, bumpy grass.

Another feature worth mentioning is the scalping plate located at the front of the mower. Again this is a handy addition that will assist you and prevent accidental damage on uneven lawns. Also, the wheels are set wider than the cutting width. This means the mower won’t cut right up to the edges. As a result, you’ll need to finish the edges with a grass strimmer or some other edging tool.

By that I mean it’s well priced but good quality and has plenty of features to help you get the best finish when cutting the grass. 160cc OHV Engine Supplied with mulch plug, a large 60-litre-capacity collector and a discharge chute, the Mountfield SP51H is capable of either bagging, recycling or rear-discharging your grass cuttings (the catcher has a dust- and pollen-retaining hard plastic top, and is made from canvas to save storage space). The full range of Mountfield petrol mowers are good value for money, and this Mountfield SP53 is no exception. You do get what you pay for with a Mountfield mower, and whilst they may be little more expensive than some cheaper brands they offer peace of mind of owning a mower that will get the job done efficiently and will not let you down. The SP53 weighs in at 35kg so the fact that its self-propelled means you don’t physically have to push it. All you have to do it concentrate on steering it. Cutting SettingsThat power is supplied by a Honda GCVx145 engine; a pro-grade air-cooled four-stroke unit with an OHV formation for emission compliance, vibration- and noise-reduction, and improved fuel-economy. After spending several weeks with the Mountfield SP53, I have to say, I’m pretty impressed. Assembly So, if you push your mower down one length of your garden, the cutting width is the width of grass your mower will actually cut. A mower with a 39 cm cutting width for example, will cut 39cm of grass, so to cover a metre will take 3 passes of your mower.
