Sera values Bhima because she is a good maid, cook, nanny, nurse and confidant. Bhima values Sera because she pays her and has, in the past come to her aide, by providing financial support during crises. Yet when Sera asks Bhima to share tea, Bhima must sit on her haunches, not on a chair. The Space Between Us' Review: YA Goes To Mars In This Weightless Teen Weepie". Metacritic. 2 February 2017. Indien ist anscheinend ein Land, wo man insbesondere als Frau mit unmäßig viel Schmerz und Leid rechnen muss, egal welcher Gesellschaftsschicht man angehört. To read Umrigar's novel is to catch a glimpse of a foreign culture, for better and for worse. Yet while the class divide between Bhima and Sera provides much of the conflict in The Space Between Us, it isn't the only source of disagreement. Class colors everything, but in the end, Umrigar shows, every one of life's ups and downs are available to us all. Of all the things I was expecting from this book, being taken to some emotional places I have never been taken to by a sci-fi book before was not one of them. I still, to this moment, hours after finishing this book, have not managed to work out how Doug Johnstone has made an alien cephalopod who can’t speak a creature that can illicit such empathy and such strong emotion from, not only the three protagonists in the book, but from the reader as well. There were times in this book that I was on the verge of tears (the scene with Heather and Sandy in the bath being the main one) and the story was so resonant and uplifting, its quite incredible. A novel where the central character in peril is so unlike anything you would normally feel a connection to is the novel has made me feel the most empathy and sympathy for that character than any other book I have read so far this year. The Space Between Us is set in Bombay, India. It is very far away. I am familiar with it only through literature and TV news snippets. Thrifty Umrigar, the author and a seasoned journalist, draws an exacting picture of the two Bombays that the middle class Sera, a Parsi and Bhima, a Hindu servant inhabit.Poignant and compelling, evocative and unforgettable, The Space Between Us is an intimate portrait of a distant yet familiar world. Set in modern-day India and witnessed through two compelling and achingly real women, the novel shows how the lives of the rich and the poor are intrinsically connected yet vastly removed from each other, and vividly captures how the bonds of womanhood are pitted against the divisions of class and culture. A subtle, elegant analysis of class and power. Umrigar transcends the specifics of two Bombay women and creates a novel that quietly roars against tyranny.

"Nitish S Rele catches up with Mumbai-born author Thrity Umrigar, on her newest release The Space Between Us". Mumbai Mirror. The Times Group. I do feel like the ending was quite predictable, I could guess most parts of the ending. I also felt like I couldn't really connect to the characters. And that's the main reason I give the book 3 stars. I think it didn't make me FEEL enough. Bombay, India-- Bhima is living in the slums, raising her granddaughter- seemingly all alone. You can tell by her actions, movements, and words that she's lived a difficult life- just how tough we learn throughout the book. Bhima works as a servant for Sera Dubash- a wealthy Indian woman, who also has lived a tough life bound with secret pain. Bhima & Sera come together to survive the abusive familial relationships in their respective lives. Gardner Elliot, the first human born on Mars, begins an online friendship with Tulsa, a teen in Colorado. On his maiden voyage to Earth, the 16-year-old finally gets to experience all the joys and wonders of a world he could only read about. Problems arise when scientists discover that Gardner's organs can't withstand the atmosphere. United with Tulsa and on the run, the interplanetary visitor races against time to unravel the mysteries of how he came to be, and where he belongs in the universe. I have a few wonderful woman friends who are very different than me --yet "The Space Between Us"...seems to be just the ingredient that has us turn to each other during the greatest times of need.

Prioritising pace, tension and high stakes … a plea for empathy, compassion and perspective … shot through with vivid characters and a sense of wonder’ Herald ScotlandWhat a great way to start the new year with a 5 star read. The people and the streets of Mumbai come alive in this delightful and at times heartbreaking story. Thrity Umrigar emigrated to the USA from India at the age of 21 and her in depth experience of living in Mumbai is so evident in the beautiful and raw descriptions of life in this teeming city of 10+ million people. a b McNary, Dave (October 23, 2015). Their journey to find out more about Sandy and his kind was fraught with obstacles, both personal and from the outside, but as they sped towards their destination with determination, they work together to get through every single absurd series of events that was thrown their way. I felt their anxiety, their fear, but also the love and understanding they were learning to find. Although Sera treats Bhima much better than her social class usually treats domestic workers and she is well aware of the injustice towards the staff, she does not manage to overcome her prejudices and her acquired arrogance. A really enjoyable novel and a new author for my real life bookshelf. This would also make a good bookclub discussion book.

Don't need to be a genius to figure out how much I liked the book, right? I already had an inkling about how the book would be. Even then, I expected something less dramatic and more balanced. Makes me wonder why I even bothered. a b c d e "Book Club Girl Talks to Thrity Umrigar". BlogTalkRadio. May 22, 2008 . Retrieved March 30, 2011.
