About this deal

You are likely to see small droplets or drips of colostrum appear as you express. Express directly into the container so you save every precious drop. If you’ve been given syringes and find it difficult to collect your colostrum, express into a small clean container (e.g. cup) and draw the colostrum up into the syringe. RELAX, Relax, relax – stressing will not help, if you can do it great, if you can’t it is not the end of the world and it has no relation to whether you will be able to breastfeed or not OR how much milk you will have

Collect your colostrum with the sterilised syringe and if necessary transfer to the larger sterilised container. Cox, S. Expressing and storing colostrum antenatally for use in the newborn period. Breastfeeding Review 2006; 14(3):11-6. All Syringes have easy to read measuring markers, making it easy to see how much Colostrum you have collected. If harvested colostrum ends up being ‘wasted’ because you are able to establish early exclusive breastfeeding, this is a cause for celebration rather than commiseration!

Colostrum collecting / Colostrum harvesting is a fantastic way to relieve the pressure of breastfeeding and helps you get things off to a successful start!

The frozen colostrum can be stored for up to six months in the freezer. Once thawed, it should be used within 24 hours. Results: Eighteen (47%) infants developed hypoglycaemia (blood glucose level less than 2 mmol/L) during the first 2 h of life. There was no difference in the cord blood glucose levels between infants with or without hypoglycaemia (3.7 ± 1.1 vs 4.5 ± 1.1 mmol/L, respectively). Infants of mothers with diabetes diagnosed prior to 28 weeks gestation were at a higher risk of developing hypoglycaemia (8 of 10 vs 10 of 28, OR 7.2, 95%CI 1.3–40.7). Hypoglycaemic infants were of significantly higher birthweight, and were more likely to be born to Caucasian mothers and by Caesarean section. Raised maternal fructosamine blood level, the need for insulin treatment or the infant’s haematocrit were not different between infants with or without hypoglycaemia. In this analysis of the experiences of women with diabetes in pregnancy, women were motivated to collect and store colostrum by wariness of medicalisation and an underlying desire to provide the best start for their babies and avoid unnecessary interventions such as formula. These motivating factors, however, also contributed to an ongoing and often overwhelming pressure to obtain colostrum, associated with considerable guilt and distress when they had difficulties with the process. This pressure also drove women to develop personal strategies to regain control in the context of their pregnancy complicated by diabetes. Women were able to adjust to frustrations associated with expressing and ultimately develop biopsychosocial fortitude for motherhood. If you’re happy to continue then keep trying every day. If it’s stressing and upsetting you then stop putting pressure on yourself. Only you can choose if you wish to continue or not. It is is not necessary to harvest colostrum and so please do not feel that you HAVE to do this. Formula will raise blood sugar levels, however, research suggests that breastfeeding colostrum has a better effect on raising blood sugar levels than formula: Hand expression is a useful technique to learn even though most mothers find they rarely need to express and store their milk. It is effective, convenient and free. You may also find you can express more milk by combining hand expression with pumping than using just a pump. When to start expressing Is it safe? Breast feeding can take time for you and baby to get to know each other. The harvested colostrum can help supplement feeds during the first few days.

People who have had breast surgery, or a history of low milk supply, can benefit from prenatal harvesting of colostrum as it ‘fires up’ the milk ducts and gets colostrum moving through them,” explains Leigh Anne O’Connor, a lactation consultant in New York City. Collect the colostrum into a clean container, like a syringe (1ml or 2ml syringe). If nothing happens, adjust your finger position slightly to find the spot that works for you. Try not to pinch your nipple or slide your fingers uncomfortably over the skin. Provide your own milk for your baby to prevent or treat conditions such as low blood sugar or jaundice.

I cried on the phone … I was like, ‘I don’t know what I’m doing, I don’t know what’s going on!’ (T1DM, 20s) Colostrum is a natural laxative that helps your baby get rid of meconium — their tar-like first poop — in their digestive tract.
