About this deal

D700 / SP 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD / 4,256×2,832 / 1/40秒 / F4.2 / -0.7EV / ISO400 / 絞り優先AE / WB:晴天 / 116mm With their deeper DOF (Depth of Field) with identical framing, APS-C camera bodies will not show the focus errors as readily as full frame bodies. Unfortunately, the new lens design no longer offers the 0.5x magnification of the previous design. The new lens offers an adequate 0.25x magnification at 300mm, with a minimum focusing distance of around five feet.

The Canon's advantages include modestly lighter weight, better AF accuracy, less vignetting and less pincushion distortion through 200mm. At 70mm with a wide open aperture, the 70-300 VC has decent sharpness right into full frame corners (the bottom corners show slight softness)

By effectively combining these two ultrasonic vibrations, it is possible to convert the energy from the vibrations to produce simple motion into energy known as ‘deflective traveling waves’, which then moves around the circumference (rotation direction) of the ring. With a full-frame digital or 35mm SLR, portrait and medium telephoto shots can be achieved on the wider 70mm end of the range and spectacular telephoto shots at the longer 300mm side. When using an ASP-C sensor camera the angle of view changes, giving it the equivalent range of 109-465mm for bold ultra-telephoto shots. And with a maximum magnification ratio 1:4, the lens can be used to explore in the realm of semi-macro photography. Tamron’s USD works with the high-frequency ultrasonic vibrations that are produced by a ring called a ‘stator’. Energy from the vibrations is used to rotate an attached metallic ring known as the ‘rotor’. Piezoelectric ceramic, an element that produces ultrasonic vibrations when voltage of a specific frequency is applied is arranged in a ring formation on the stator. This electrode configuration of piezoelectric ceramic causes two ultrasonic vibrations to occur in the stator. The internal focusing mechanism also means that the front element neither extends nor rotates throughout the focus range, which is a bonus when using rotation-specific filters such as a circular polariser or graduated neutral density filter.

The first point of comparison is between the old and new. Apart from a bit of a price hike, the old lens matches the new for sharpness, and in some cases, betters it. However the new lens offers improved CA tolerance, and less corner shading, as well as the obvious benefits of USD focusing and Vibration Control. Even though this lens does not have a wide aperture, the relatively long 300mm focal length is still able to create a Here is a comparison of the aperture step down between the Tamron and some Canon telephoto lens models. Focus breathing (image changes size when focusing) is noticeable at the wide end, but far less apparent to me at 300mm.This combination of best in class image resolution, Ultrasonic Silent Drive and Vibration Compensation is a new achievement of Tamron technology, culminating in the production of a premium 70-300mm telephoto zoom lens. D700 / SP 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD / 2,832×4,256 / 1/100秒 / F5.6 / +0.3EV / ISO400 / 絞り優先AE / WB:雲天 / 300mm Uno fra i più riusciti, insieme al 24-70 (vai a recensione del Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 SP), della casa giapponese. but the relatively narrow aperture typically found in this class of lens removes low light action from its uses list.

As you would expect, this huge improvement in image quality, along with better build quality and much better autofocus performance, comes at a price. The Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II Lens and the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Lens are the only non-Nikon lenses There's not a huge difference between these images, especially in the center of the frame. The Tamron shows slightly less chromatic aberration and slightly better sharpness in the corner though. It's interesting that both seem to show the same type of CA (green/magenta).

Besides allowing sharp handheld shots to be captured at shutter speeds longer than needed without stabilization, image stabilization makes perfect framing much easier.Overall: I really do love this lens, for the price it is almost unbeatable. The build is very good, no problems with that. It is solid and feels good in the hands, the zoom is a bit stiff and there is no focus limiter, but these are minor points. The focusing system is good, and does a good job speed wise. And the image quality is truly great until 200mm and a little stopped down, only degrading in the 300mm range to an ok level. In the end I can only end this review with high praise, and highly recommend it for anyone that wants to get a lens in this range, but doesn’t want to pay more for the main brands. I give this lens a solid 4/5 considering price point and performance, it is just as good as the main brands for half the price.
