About this deal

Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Aster is a sensitive boy who prefers quiet activities within the homes and gardens. Charlie, his confidant, is an energetic girl who enjoys sports and road biking.

Occultism: Klarion is extremely skilled in the use of magic, and knows several advanced spells (such as the forming of a Horigal, soul-brokering, and how to steal magic from others.) I wanted to like this. I really did. It started off so well with so many elements that I love in a story but then it just sort of fizzled out and I felt very ‘meh’ for the last two thirds. The New 52 introduced Klarion's current origin and powers. Klarion once again appears to be from an alternate dimension, one that is probably tied to Earth-2. In this continuity his familiar is dead or absent for long stretches of time, to no apparent ill effect. Major Story Arcs The Demon Fifteen-year-old Morgan has a secret: She can't wait to escape the perfect little island where she lives. She's desperate to finish high school and escape her sad divorced mom, her volatile little brother, and worst of all, her great group of friends...who don't understand Morgan at all. Because really, Morgan's biggest secret is that she has a lot of secrets, including the one about wanting to kiss another girl. Then one night, Morgan is saved from drowning by a mysterious girl named Keltie. The two become friends and suddenly life on the island doesn't seem so stifling anymore. But Keltie has some secrets of her own. And as the girls start to fall in love, everything they're each trying to hide will find its way to the surface...whether Morgan is ready or not.

Divination: Through the use of the magics he learned as a young boy, Klarion can divine many events and situations such as when he needed to search Gotham City for his lost familiar. If you're more of a Find the Symbolism/Read Deeper/ALL THE ALLEGORIES! person, then you'll find a whole lot more going on including gender roles, societal expectations, diversity and acceptance, as well as witches and shapeshifters, fitting in (or not), family, friendship, and the making of terrible monsters and how that can be avoided. These five episodes were "Wing It Like Witches", "Enchanting Grom Fright", "Escaping Expulsion", "Through the Looking Glass Ruins", and "Yesterday's Lie". The driving force at the core of the narrative is love. Love is what causes Sister Witch to save Ned by any means necessary, love is what motivates Áine to try and save her father even when he is beyond redemption, and in a way even The Bandit King was driven by love. Or perhaps more accurately the loss of the person he loved so fiercely that her death broke him. Ned’s dad just broke my heart. So much of his actions and behaviour are caused by grief, love and guilt. He can’t forgive himself for not being able to save both his boys and loving Ned is double-edged for him, because every day looking at Ned means remembering he failed the boy that looked so much like him. Of course, this is a small issue that did not take away from my enjoyment of the novel. I imagine most young readers will think nothing of it. But I did notice, and I wish the mothers were portrayed as a little more “modern” than they are. It seems the book both fights gender roles and plays into them at the same time. IMMACULATE CONCEPTION?

On Earth-11, a heroic, gender-swapped incarnation of Klarion named Klarieene the Witch-Girl appears as a member of Teen Justice and student of Zatara. Psychic Link: Klarion has an innate psychic bond with his cat, allowing him to communicate with Teekl and see through Teekl's eyes. He traveled above ground, to Manhattan, where he was discovered by Melmoth, who offered the boy food and a place to stay. Melmoth was secretly looking for Limbo Town, as he himself had created the original witch-men and witch-women by interbreeding with the humans at Roanoke. He thus sent Klarion with a gang called the Deviant Ones to steal a giant subterranean drill for him. Klarion used Teekl to case the museum where the drill was held, and gang leader Billy Beezer set the Deviants loose within the museum. Then, during a night of shapeshifting practice, one of the boys goes missing. Aster knows he can search for the boy with the witchcraft he’s been secretly learning. Could breaking his family’s most important tradition save the day—or ruin everything? s mother dies before she can finish her sentence. From then on it's only Áine and her father, the Bandit King.
