About this deal

It's not a professional quality lens but if you can use a 1-off lens, then the Sigma is your best bet. Focus accuracy and repeatability is critical for long tele lenses with their large magnification and resulting shallow depth of field. I got the 120-400 first, a lens that doesn't impress anyone at 400mm, but the 150-500 does perform a bit better, not least at longer focal lengths than the 120-400 (which is best at 120-150). As well as being quick its motor is also quiet and acts internally, so the manual-focusing ring remains motionless but can still be used at any time to make adjustments. Open aperture performance of the Pentax at 300mm is impressive (and well ahead of the Sigma at the same setting), but both suffer loss of sharpness in the outer field.

When I tested the Sigma 120-400 OS I was quite disappointed to find only a 1 stop advantage (see my review of the Sigma AF 120-400mm f/4.

I recently retired my three V2s from still photography so I could extend their serviceable life for my client video business. An ultra-telephoto zoom lens covering a telephoto range up to 500mm, incorporating Sigma's original OS (Optical Stabilizer) function. Family moments are precious and sometimes you want to capture that time spent with loved ones or friends in better quality than your phone can manage. There is a zoom lock at the 150mm position to ensure the lens doesn't accidently extend when being carried.

This lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), which ensures a quiet and high-speed AF as well as full-time manual focusing capability.

Stopping down does improve sharpness a little, but on normal pictorial targets you'd be hard pressed to see the difference. km away from the camera and you have to take into account that heat-shimmer is already building at 8:38 in the morning. But even if you have OS/IS/VR in your lens you better do your very best to keep the lens as stable as you can to make the action of the image stabilization as easy as possible. The "APO DG OS HSM" designation indicates that it is a Sigma DG lens (full frame coverage), with OS (Optical Stabilization), an HSM (HyperSonic Motor), and is an "APO" (Apochromatic) design to minimize chromatic aberration. At 500mm I found the optical stabilization (OS) system enables me to get pretty sharp handheld shots most of the time down to a shutter speed of around 1/125s, occasionally as slow as 1/60s. The Sigma 150-600 HSM Sports and the Tamron 150-600 has the usual direct coupling and linear gearing of a lens designed for DSLRs and the Sony 200-600 also offers linear response for MF.

But I will say that the 150-600C is very fast in focusing and I don't think you will be disappointed in that regard at all. This is a pretty significant difference and that is likely what you are observing when comparing the images in this article with the ones you have captured. This unique lens is an excellent optical performer featuring three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements for optimum color correction and sharpness throughout the entire zoom range, rear focusing system corrects for fluctuation of aberration due to focusing. You can also select different modes for the optical image stabilization on all five lenses in this comparison. as you might expect on a crop camera, isn’t too serious at that focal length (500mm) but there’s some lateral chromatic aberration visible at the edges and corners of the frame. DG OS HSM superzoom works best in AF mode and its Optical Stabiliser is best reserved for improving viewing rather than the quality of captured images.
