About this deal

This is a sad story as we not only follow Panenka but other characters as we see everyone live with the difficulties of life. I kind of thought it was going to be received as a sort of like: ‘sorry for your troubles but a bit too personal’.

According to studies, a Panenka has a lower scoring probability over placement or power, though it is alleged that if successful, a Panenka's psychological impact on the opposite team may be profound, which may be why penalty takers elect to use it.He wasn’t bad, he says, “but I remember marking Jason Sherlock at one stage, and I was like, yeah, I’m not at that level. Panenka is also the nickname that Joseph got as a young footballer when he missed a penalty, opting for this Panenka move, which meant the team were relegated. He is not a bad man, but he is far from perfect, and his complexities and struggles ring absolutely true. This book is almost exclusively made up of really emotional, reflective dialogues and inner monologues full of figurative language and those types of emotional statements that you get at the ending of a sentimental movie.

About half a year ago I predicted based off essentially nothing that Panenka would be a new favorite, a five star read, as the kids say, and I must say, for potentially the only time in 2022, I was right. As his history is gradually revealed, each strand adds to the picture, and we come to understand him in a way that feels organic and meaningful.

Together they tentatively embark on a friendship as Esther breaks down a few of Panenka’s self-imposed walls. The move is known for only being used by confident penalty takers who dare to risk missing the kick. To answer that earlier question on whether Panenka will strike those emotional chords, the answer is, yes, most definitely. Leonard is a sort of an adjunct member of Hungry Paul’s family and I was a bit like that for other families on the street.

And “The evening played out as it always did, like a non-recurring decimal, each thought causing the next, onwards without resolution.

That wasn’t the case for Joseph, aka Panenka, the eponymous subject of Rónán Hession’s 2nd novel, after the much-heralded Leonard and Hungry Paul. We need to make our own interpretation of what we see and this does change over the course of the book.

But isn’t that what allowing yourself be loved is all about – letting something greater than fear into your life? Panenka and Marie-Thérèse are both in the aftermath of failed relationships and working together to raise Arthur and trying to find their own sources of happiness. And when it’s gone, there’s light for the first time and something different grows back in its place. Moroccan right-back Achraf Hakimi hit a successful panenka against Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon during the 2022 FIFA World Cup propelling Morocco into the quarter-finals for the first time in their history. Panenka has spent 25 years living with the disastrous mistakes This book has some truly beautiful lines and if you like annotating your books you’re in for a treat.
