When Alexievich first tried to publish her magnificent book The Unwomanly Face of War, a Soviet censor told her: “We don’t need your little history. We need the big history.” Many years later, Alexievich’s record triumphed, and now Ernaux’s Nobel puts the nail in the coffin of that censor and his partners in thought: we all need little histories. They’re what literature is made of.

La Place, or The Place, or Positions, is entitled A Man’s Place on the hardcover edition I bought in the mid-eighties that you see above. I can’t recall if I ever read it, but I thought I would read it in conjunction with a long unfinished novel I mess around with from time to time about my own father. I also read it now because I saw Ilse had been reading Ernaux’s work and as so often happens with Ilse, she nudged me (gently, urgently) through her lovely review to read her work. I felt called by her and was glad she did. Is she a great writer in this book? I don't know, it's an unspectacular story and style, at least in this translation, but also quietly moving.

The core of this short book (and most of her books are short, part of a larger memoir project) is of course about her father, begun at the occasion of his death. It is also about a time and a place, mid twentieth century France. Ernaux writes of her struggle to move out of the working-class life in which she was raised to the middle class--university, teaching primary school, marrying “well” into her husband’s middle class family, becoming an academic and a writer. Her father’s pride and sense of loss about her moving out and “up” was mirrored by her own pride and sense of loss. Her words truly reflect the complicated relationship she had with her family.Ernaux was born in Lillebonne in Normandy, France, and grew up in nearby Yvetot, [4] where her parents, Blanche (Dumenil) and Alphonse Duchesne, [5] ran a café and grocery in a working-class part of town. [6] [7] In 1960, she travelled to London, where she worked as an au pair, an experience she would later relate in 2016's Mémoire de fille ( A Girl's Story). [7] Upon returning to France, she studied at the universities of Rouen and then Bordeaux, qualified as a schoolteacher, and earned a higher degree in modern literature in 1971. She worked for a time on a thesis project, unfinished, on Pierre de Marivaux. [8]
