About this deal

USB 3.1 cables are considered full-featured USB-C cables. They are electronically marked cables that contain a chip with an ID function based on the configuration channel and vendor-defined messages (VDM) from the USB Power Delivery 2.0 specification. Cable length should not exceed 2 metres (6ft 7in) for Gen1, and 1 metre (3ft 3in) for Gen2. [9] The electronic ID chip provides information about product/vendor, cable connectors, USB signaling protocol (2.0, Gen1, Gen2), passive/active construction, use of V CONN power, available V BUS current, latency, RX/TX directionality, SOP controller mode, and hardware/firmware version. USB4, released in 2019, is the first USB transfer protocol standard that is only available exclusively via USB-C Fabrics. The good news, though, is that if you invest in a couple of normal USB-C cables, they will work with anything and everything that supports USB-C, regardless of generation. Note, however, that that does not extend to Thunderbolt. Though Thunderbolt 3 and 4 use a USB-C physical connector, you'll need an appropriate Thunderbolt-specific cable to guarantee compatibility and full speed. This cable will have a USB-C connector at both ends but have a lightning-bolt symbol on each. It'll also be significantly pricier than a standard USB-C. They are marked with a SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps (previously marketed as SuperSpeed+) logo. There are also cables which can support only USB2.0 with a nominal data rate of 480 Mbit/s (with maximal effective data rate of ~40MB/s). The USB Implementers Forum certifies valid cables so they can be marked accordingly and users can distinguish them from non-compliant products. This mode also allows concurrent charging of a device exposing the analog audio interface (through V BUS and GND), however only at 5V and 500mA, as CC pins are unavailable for any negotiation.a b c d e "USB Type-C Overview" (PDF). usb.org. If you buy an ultrathin laptop, it will almost certainly have at least one USB-C port, which will catapult you into the ecosystem automatically. If you're more of a lover of desktops, you're certain to find the ports there, too, with at least one on the motherboard-side I/O panel and likely more on high-end and gaming desktops. Some desktops and aftermarket PC cases are putting one on the front panel, too. (Desktop DIY types should know, though, that a USB-C port on a PC case's front or top will require a specific USB-C header connector at the motherboard end, and only late-model motherboards will have these.) V BUS and GND provide 5V up to 900mA, in accordance with the USB3.1 specification. A specific USB-C mode may also be entered, where 5V at nominal either 1.5A or 3A is provided. [59] A third alternative is to establish a USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) contract. In regard to power, the devices are supposed to negotiate a Power Delivery contract before an Alternate Mode is entered. [60] GND Smith, Ryan (2018-07-17).
