We have so much very good technology in Europe that we could be up there with anybody, but if they don’t gear up in a different way then we will lose out and lose out big time’ (Neslen, 2020b).

The French (Askew 2018) and German (Wanat 2020) governments have also banned certain animal product designations from being used for vegetable-based products. The same issues apply to the UK, where it would not be possible to bring a product like Eat Just’s to market as rapidly as in Singapore. The next major leap came in December 2020 when Singapore became the first country in the world to approve a cultivated meat product for sale, a chicken nugget from San Francisco-based start-up Eat Just. A range of companies, across the UK and the rest of Europe, as well as in Singapore, Japan, Israel and the United States, are attempting to transform cultivated meat into a commercially viable product. It found that, depending on the production process, cultivated meat could reduce energy use between 7 per cent and 45 per cent, greenhouse gas emissions by 78 per cent to 96 per cent, water use by 82 per cent to 96 per cent and land use by 99 per cent. A book leaves our collection of over seven million titles and begins a new chapter every two seconds, enabling more goods to be reused. Previous applications under the same novel food process in the EU have taken over three years, according to reporting by Politico’s Arthur Neslen (2020a) and the aforementioned studies. Due to the large number of vehicles on site and the small spaces between them, we cannot accommodate groups (2+), children (aged 16 and under), or pets. This effectively reverses the onus of proof, requiring the proposer of a new technology to substantiate that it is safe.

In sunnier times, Derek’s daily driver is either a mint 1961 Morris 6cwt pick-up or a 1965 Bentley S3 Continental: “The Bentley was very much a car that found me – as part of a pair, actually. The underlying regulatory process could be improved to be more welcoming of cultivated meat and other new food technologies. The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal. This could be modelled on the FCA’s ‘Regulatory Sandbox’, which ‘allows firms to test innovative propositions in the market with real consumers’. That makes four Bentleys in the Mathewson collection, because he also owns two MkVIs and reckons the model is the most usable luxury classic of the 1950s, with performance that still does well in modern traffic. Companies are also developing other cultivated products, including steak, chicken, pork, lamb, duck, fish, shrimp, foie gras, kangaroo, mouse and horse – as well as cultivated dairy products including milk and cheese, though this paper will primarily focus on meat-related applications.

The trouble is that the weight of the gold has caused their ship, the Stuck Pig to becomewell, stuck! Derek has an ambivalent relationship with private sales that led him to swear off old cars once, and eventually to switch to auctioneering.highlights how the regulations originally set a high standard of proof designed to address GMOs, but were not amended following the development of separate regulations for GMOs in 2003, and therefore resulted in concerns about ‘too high a level of scrutiny on foods that were not as risky as the GM[O] foods that the drafters intended to target’.

Singapore’s regulatory approval process is said to take between three and six months, though Verzijden says SFA considers this ‘slightly optimistic’. In 2021, EFSA approved mung bean protein for use in Eat Just’s egg substitute product, while the UK has not (Askew 2021). Indeed, incumbent meat and dairy producers in the US and Europe have already lobbied to limit the ability of producers of alternative protein products to use common terminology such as ‘milk’, ‘burger,’ ‘steak’, ‘bacon’ or ‘sausage’. The Singapore experience demonstrates that the novel foods process can be improved without lowering standards. Under the existing rules, also retained EU law, gene editing is covered by the same regulations as GMOs.The novel food regulations have specific time limits: a one-month validation process, followed by up to nine months’ risk assessment process. Nor have there been any reported safety issues with the product, demonstrating that the regulatory process is sufficient. Sugars, salts, amino acids, growth factor proteins, nutrients and other organic components are added to enable the cells to grow. There are moral questions, such as whether cultivated meat represents a further commodification of animals and the risk of unintended consequences of biotechnology through to whether this technology could enable consumption of human flesh.
