About this deal

My favorites thrillers are the ones with clever twists AND well-developped characters. After reading 4 of Feeney’s books, I have to face the facts: TO ME, she masters the twists, but not the character development. That’s why I never rated one of her books higher than 4 stars. Daisy Darker makes no exception even if I love reading about dysfunctional families. What a book! A dysfunctional family meets Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None with a truly gasp-inducing twist. Exceedingly clever, stylish, and emotionally astute, your visit to Seaglass is one you won’t soon forget. This is the book you’ve been looking for.” The book opens with a note from the authors’ agent said they received the manuscript of this story wrapped in brown paper, and that the author has been dead for some time.

The atmosphere is spooky and tense, but the guessing game is fun, and the entire experience was very entertaining. A great book to curl up with a dark and stormy night….Sister relationships! How can you compare/contrast your own sisterly relationships to those of Daisy and her sisters? There has definitely been more than one time I’ve been vexed with my sister, but as of yet, we’ve never resorted to murder and/or cliff-tossing. Sister relationships, like any family relationships, can be very multi-leveled and complicated, but can also be extremely close. I go over these more in depth in my Spoiler Discussion Post for Daisy Darker. Obviously, And Then There Were None. There were nods to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I was getting Little Women vibes at times from this, with the three sisters and Conor being Laurie. The family dog was named Poppins. The Element of Surprise in Daisy Darker The story unfolds through the eyes of the main character and narrator, the titular Daisy, who relays both current events and traumatic memories with a general sense of remove. But for a book like this to be truly effective, Feeney needed to crank the dial on atmosphere, amping up the way foreboding swirls of mist crawled along the shore outside, or how the damp, dark interiors of Seaglass start to close in on its inhabitants as the night goes on. Instead we get scant mentions of the surroundings at the outset, which are soon lost in a swarm of interpersonal squabbles between Daisy and her older sisters, Rose and Lily. But I didn’t see the Trixie twist coming. All the “B” clues she left (Trixie is short for Beatrice apparently. Not Beatrix?) went right over my head.

Clever, sinister, claustrophobic, beguiling and utterly compelling. I was totally hooked from the first sentence.” Secrets were such an integral part of this story. What were the secrets that most impacted the Darker family? Oof! Where to start?! There was the huge secret that Daisy’s sisters killed her, but also other secrets–that Trixie was aware of all that was happening, what happened before Daisy died, that Nana was aware of all the misdoings…and so much more. But at the stroke of midnight, as a storm rages, Nana is found dead. And an hour later, the next family member follows… Daisy Darker is a first rate, gripping thriller. Alice Feeney's gorgeous writing will sweep you up like a runaway train. Hold on for the ride!”A palm reader once told Nana that she wouldn’t live past 80 years old. Convinced this is her last birthday, she invites her estranged family members to Sea Glass to celebrate. Many years ago, a palm reader predicted that Nana, Beatrice Darker, wouldn't live beyond the age of 80, and so she has invited the entire family to her island estate of Seaglass to celebrate the momentous birthday. Her son Frank, his ex-wife Nancy, their three daughters: Rose, Lily, and Daisy, and Lily's daughter Trixie, along with old family friend Conor are in attendance. But every member of the Darker family is hiding secrets, some more sinister than others. Which of the family members was your favorite? Why? I thought Trixie was such a cool teenager. She wasn’t afraid to be her own person, and stood strong in contrast to her mother.
