About this deal

my theory still stands: colleen hoover, ironically, cannot write a good romance. i believe every single one of her books has these terrible, wild plot twists to cover up the fact that she cannot. lily and atlas had zero chemistry apart from them talking about how miserable they were when they first met and how they were each other’s saving grace. I finished it ends with us a few months ago, and i kinda liked it especially the ending because it was the best decision. I didnt like lily’s personality in the beginning because it was weak, but when the ending came i felt relieved because it felt like she had progressed and made me feel like she is stronger now. The ending was good and it should’ve stopped right there, i liked it because it left us to imagine what will happen next.

Rile is still extremely toxic. No, contrary to many readers’ I do not feel this, his abuse, etc. is romanticized at all. I don’t understand the people who feel this way, as to me, both of these books clearly paint him as highly toxic, and Lily as a victim. But you do you, interpret it how ever you want to. < Just thought I’d share since I’m reviewing here. :) I love book discussions, hit me up if you feel like it or leave a comment. My heart is bursting with everything that is in Atlas heart. That man, his passion, his love his tenderness and compassion, im head over heels here. year old Theo who talked like he was going on 50 was my favorite character in this book. And you know why? Because this little kid was pretty much bullying Atlas every time they interacted and I loved it. Some adults should be bullied more. 💅 I love love love the meaning behind why Colleen Hoover wrote this book and I also love the couple!!

i swore i’d never read another coho book, but it ends with us was the only one i could somewhat stomach so i decided to read it starts with us to see how it was. Might be because I’m very sentimental and I needed closure, but I adored this book (regardless of the Ellen letters and the Tiktok mentions) <3 Every antagonist in “It Starts With Us” fell into a gray, middle-ground role of both victim and enabler, including both ex-lovers and ex-mothers. These complex characters were taught or treated poorly, leading them to be hurt and lash out against Lily and Atlas. The “antagonists” in the novel were not easy to dislike: They simply didn’t have the same resources as Lily and Atlas. They remained in a cycle of relationship violence, despite their efforts to start something new. The novel never paints them in a negative light but rather shows how these people may not fit in the lives of those recovering from abuse. The antagonists in “It Starts With Us” have the potential to be protagonists — if only given the proper help.

It Starts with Us By Colleen Hoover |The Works

Hoover does a great job of (at least per my own experience) depicting some of Lily’s feelings/ inner thoughts, etc. in regards to being a domestic abuse survivor. It stays with you.what made me dislike the second book was lily’s personality, because I thought that she had overcome all her weaknesses and had finally become stronger but this book crushed all of those thoughts for me. Am I the only person in this entire universe wanting Colleen Hoover to write an amazing queer rep romance?! As a child of divorced parents and a childhood filled with co-parenting, “It Starts With Us” deeply resonated with me and felt like an accurate portrayal of the difficulties of marriage which I saw growing up. Almost half of marriages end in divorce, and this novel makes this statistic come to life.
