The effects of this gamma-ray burst were studied with the help of the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES), also called Zhangheng, a Chinese-Italian mission launched in 2018. We now briefly outline several example workflows made possible by the tools and wrappers we describe in this manuscript. General tools for “Next Generation Sequencing” (NGS) are especially well served in Galaxy. However, the more specialised the tools become (typically, the further downstream your analysis), the less likely it is that a specific desired tool has already been wrapped for use in Galaxy. Maxim Markevitch, of Nasa’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, a co-author of the paper, compared the process to a stream of air travelling down a drinking straw and then turning into a bubble at the end of the straw.

We may be witnessing the death of a galaxy

This article describes our NCBI BLAST+ [ 16] wrappers for Galaxy and associated tools and datatype definitions. Currently, these tools have not been made available at the public server hosted by the Galaxy Project owing to concerns over the resulting computational load (J Taylor, personal communication, 2013). However, they are available from the Galaxy Tool Shed for automated installation into a local Galaxy instance, or from our source code repository (hosted by GitHub, Inc., see Availability and requirements section), and are released under the open-source Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) licence. Applications A team led by Benjamin Gompertz, an astrophysicist at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, looked at the entire high-energy light curve, or the evolution of the event’s brightness over time. Most of the 29 magnetars now cataloged in our Milky Way galaxy exhibit occasional X-ray activity, but only two have produced giant flares. The most recent event, detected on Dec. 27, 2004, produced measurable changes in Earth’s upper atmosphere despite erupting from a magnetar located about 28,000 light-years away. The team then inferred the properties of the dust grains in the clouds because the X-rays are scattered according to the size, shape and composition of the dust.

The original Galaxy release did not include wrappers for the standalone NCBI BLAST or BLAST+ command line tools ( Altschul et al., 1990; Camacho et al., 2009). The use of BLAST was a priority for our own work, so we developed wrappers for the core BLAST+ tools. These were initially included in the main Galaxy repository before being migrated to the Galaxy Tool Shed. The BLAST+ tools have not been made available at the http://usegalaxy.org public server due to concerns over the resulting computational load (J Taylor, pers. comm., 2013), but are pre-installed on Galaxy CloudMan images, and can easily be added to a local Galaxy installation. Cosmic rays, echoes of such violent celestial events, rain down on to Earth nearly constantly and can be detected by instruments, such as the Telescope Array observatory in Utah, which found the Amaterasu particle. Observing this fluctuating tail is conclusive evidence of a giant flare. Seen from millions of light-years away, though, this emission is too dim to detect with today’s instruments. Because these signatures are missing, giant flares in our galactic neighborhood may be masquerading as much more distant and powerful merger-type GRBs. The difference between your typical gamma-ray burst and this one is about the same as the difference between the light bulb in your living room and the lit-up floodlights in a sports stadium,” says Andrew Levan, Radbound University, the Netherlands, who used the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope and the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope to observe the burst. An explosion on an unprecedented scale 

This approach screens two proteins against all nucleotide sequences from the NCBI nucleotide sequence database (NCBI NT) within hours on our cluster, which leads to the identification of all organisms with an interesting gene structure for further investigation. As usual in Galaxy workflows, every parameter, including the proximity distance, can be changed and additional steps can be easily added. For example, additional filtering to refine the initial BLAST hits, or inclusion of a third query sequence, can be added. Identifying novel proteins On Dec. 11, 2021, NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope detected a blast of high-energy light from the outskirts of a galaxy around 1 billion light-years away. The event has rattled scientists’ understanding of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), the most powerful events in the universe. This burst is called GRB 211211A.
