TfL estimate that just under half of all Londoners' journeys start and finish in outer London. Only around a quarter of these are made by public transport. This is because public transport options for orbital journeys are poor by comparison to the car.

The worst-ever rail accident in UK history, the Quintinshill rail disaster, occurred on the WCML during World War I, on 22 May 1915, between Glasgow Central and Carlisle, in which 227 were killed and 246 injured. The western section of the M25 past Heathrow Airport is one of Europe's busiest, carrying around 200,000 vehicles per day. It announced this strike action shortly after the RMT union, whose members operate London Underground, confirmed it had reached a deal with train companies that could bring their strikes to an end.
