Becoming a part of the family of God means that your Father provides for you in many ways, for example: But there’s one more twist to the story: the older brother, who has been working hard for his father for years. He gets angry when he hears the celebration for his wayward younger brother. It is easier to explain Abba using the Italian language by looking at the word “Papa”. This is a real word very young children use for their Fathers and is pretty easy for them to say and is a term of great love and endearment. However, the very same word “Papa” is used for the Pope, someone the Italians particularly hold in great esteem. The word Papa therefore holds huge honour and a magnificence and reverence in that context and one of great intimacy and familiarity in the other.

Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.’” (Luke 15:31–32) Jesus knew the Father’s heart better than anyone, and He delighted to reveal it to the rest of the Father’s sons and daughters. Jesus taught us to pray to God as Father (Matt. 6:9ff). Prayer is time spent in the presence of the Father. It is not only talking to Him but listening to His voice; it is a two-way conversation. Our Father wants you to spend time in His presence; praising, worshiping and communing with Him. He never ignores you, and He loves to hear your voice.

Resting securely in the love of God is a birthright of every believer. You can be confident that your Father loves you constantly with an unchanging love (Rom. 8:39). God declares that in His love, He wants to be involved in every area of your life. There is nothing you do that God does not care about. This longing can only be fulfilled by being in an intimate relationship with him! Longing to be close to our Father is part of our design! Let’s not speed by these two words, forgetting their significance and power. If God truly is our Father, then this knowledge can transform how we live, pray, and serve. And transformed people will bring good news to a lost, hurting, and often fatherless world. I could go on but what is important is that you know and take hold of the fact that God’s Father-heart reveals all those things to be lies. God loves you and is calling you to greater intimacy; to a deeper knowledge of Him and His ways; to love Him with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. Somehow, I received the message that God was upset with humans and Jesus protected us from his anger. When I eventually learned to see God as a kind and loving father, my entire walk with the Lord changed.

The story is left open-ended, perhaps a deliberate invitation to the religious Pharisees to join the celebration of those who have been forgiven of their many sins. I would've liked the discussion questions at the end of the book to be immediately following each chapter. I didn't even notice them, until we had read the whole book and it was too late to benefit from the guided interaction that I'm sure would've enhanced our interaction with the material.
