By learning about and protecting the birds of New Hampshire, we contribute to the preservation of their habitats and the overall biodiversity of the region. The Procellariids are the main group of medium-sized "true petrels", characterized by united nostrils with medium septum and a long outer functional primary. Six species have been recorded in New Hampshire. These birds have a distinctive song that may be heard near water or on farmlands searching for food or nesting places. Scientific Classification: The Purple Finch belongs to the finch family, Fringillidae, and its scientific name is Haemorhous purpureus.
