About this deal

While I did enjoy this overall I found it weaker compared to other middle grades I have read recently. The descriptions of the characters are vague enough so that any child can picture themselves in the story, which I love. In the third mysterious tale of Eerie-on-Sea, it's almost Ghastly Night, and the Shadowghast—an ancient spirit in a lantern—lurks in wait for the power to enslave the town. The story was interesting though and I liked Roar as a land in itself though perhaps it would have been better if it would have explored the world a little more.

Elliot's mum is ill and his home is under threat, but a shooting star crashes to earth and changes his life forever. The importance of holding on to your childhood imagination and creativity features fairly prominently as a theme, making it great for children at the end of primary school. This is a book that paints vivid images in your mind, and bouncing between multiple locations, each with their own unique settings, it refuses to become dull.

The Land of Roar is a fun-filled adventure book for middle-graders set in a magical world filled with mystical creatures, some good, some evil. This is such a good book I couldn’t stop reading, Rose and Arthur are the coolest fictional twins I’ve ever come across and I absolutely loved Wininja. Jenny McLachlan also acknowledges through this book, how scary it can be for children as they prepare for secondary school. I enjoyed reading The Land of Roar and it’d be great for a wide range of readers, but in particular I think it’s fantastic for reluctant readers.

However over time Rose and Arthur have begun to forget about Roar, until that is when clearing out their Granddad's loft they find a map of the imaginary land and many of the props that they used in their play.

The villain is a scarecrow-crow, hard to visualize but thankfully some detailed illustrations bring him to life. Fun, adventure, magic, dragons, a bad guy, humour and of course, the absolute best part, the magical alternate fantasy world!

Arthur watches as his Grandad disappears into the chair and waits, but when he doesn’t come out there is only one thing for it, he has to follow him, but the land of Road has changed and the evil Magpie Crowky has captured his Grandad, there is only one thing for it, Arthur is going to have to travel the land and rescue him, he just wishes Rose was with him but she still doesn’t believe. For all ebook purchases, you will be prompted to create an account or login with your existing HarperCollins username and password. Jenny McLachlan has combined short chapters with constantly flowing action, meaning the story hooks readers very quickly and keeps them engaged right until the end.
