About this deal

Netgear today announced the availability of the new WAX204 WiFi 6 Access Point, adding to the company's portfolio of WiFi 6-enabled business products.

In addition to the management SSID, the access point supports four WiFi networks. By default, only the main WiFi network is enabled.

This naming sure makes things confusing. The only positive outcome I can think of is the benefit of low expectations. And if so, that worked -- the WAX204 proved to be very much of a pleasant surprise. The Netgear WAX204 Wi-Fi 6 AX1800 Dual Band Wireless Access Point has a WAN port, making it a Wi-Fi router by definition. But, again, to sum up: The WAX204 is a Wi-Fi router that can also work as an access point. And like many other routers, it also supports the bridge mode, where it works as a Wi-Fi adapter for a few wired clients. Netgear WAX204: Hardware specifications Model It's unclear what that database entails and what the router will do precisely. However, it seems that QoS, in this case, is based on application and automatically prioritizes the Internet for real-time communication, such as Voice over IP or video conferencing. The Netgear WAX204's QoS feature works on a database instead of the user's inputs. Sep 9th 2021 Worldwide Enterprise WLAN Market Continued Strong Growth in Second Quarter 2021, According to IDC (0) The WAX204 doesn't have a built-in VPN server, but it can work as a VPN client, turning your local network into part of a remote one when applicable. The coverage was decent, too, similar to that of most 2x2 Wi-Fi 6 routers, like the Asus RT-AX58U or the TP-Link AX50. The access point comes with a mall setup booklet and a self-explanatory introduction printed on its underside. A typical PoE AP setup As a business AP, though, this no-power-adapter approach is quite normal. You can think of this as a way to cut costs since many businesses (and homes) already switch with multiple PoE ports. On the angled sides of the WAP are the ventilation grills to exhaust the warm air from the router, which tend to get hot under heavy network usage. The five status LEDs are located on the top panel along the bottom middle. From left to right are the Power LED, Internet LED, WiFi LED, LAN LED, and WPS LED. They function as all status LEDs do: solid green means all is good and blinking green means network activity.

The interface is similar to Netgear's Nighthawk routers, such as the RAX120 or RAX200, and comes with a matching set of settings. These include the support for Dynamic DNS, port-forwarding, IP reservations, and so on.

Multi-gig connectivity on WiFi 6 devices for a faster backbone

theWAX204can also save you money due to its ability to act as a router as well as an access point. This functionality allows you to forgo the cost and complexity of a separate router and simply have one device to perform both tasks." On top of it, there's a fifth SSID (2.4GHz) used for the setup process. You can turn it off once you've gotten things up and running. Also, the router doesn't have remote web-based management, making its support for Dynamic DNS a bit incomplete. Netgear might add this via firmware updates, however.Mar 16th 2021 NETGEAR Introduces Powerful New Tri-Band Mesh WiFi to the Portfolio of Nighthawk Mesh WiFi 6 Systems (16)
