About this deal

Similarly, many crossword variants can be adapted to work with the skeleton principle – it provides an extra ingredient that can make puzzles more interesting, or more challenging, depending on your point of view. Using symmetry makes the solving process a lot easier, although it is still tricky - as you will need to battle solving the grid and the clues both at the same time. There are 50 skeleton crosswords in this brand new book with all new puzzles, and the grid pattern for each of the puzzles is different so you'll be provided with a unique crossword and a unique challenge to work out the grid shape for every one of these puzzles. Exactly how much help these starters provide depends on the type of symmetry employed in the design of the grid.

If the solver is able to enter an answer, the answer is likely to provide a clue to further black squares – the square immediately following the last letter of the answer will be black (unless the answer runs to the edge of the grid).A lovely sudoku variant, sandwich sudoku gives you hints around the edge of the grid as to the location of the 1 and 9 in each row and column.

The idea of skeleton crosswords (crosswords where, given the clues, a couple of clue numbers, a couple of black squares and some information about the symmetrical nature of the grid, you are expected to be able to complete the puzzle) is not in itself new, but our magazine takes the idea to a new level. To build an easy to find question title simply select the paper and quiz, enter the quiz number if relevant and fill in the Publication Date. We hope you enjoy the challenge that is posed by these skeleton puzzles - if you can complete them all, then you truly are a crossword master. However, unlike a standard crossword, you have to work out what the grid looks like at the same time as solving the clues, it is not already in place as with a standard crossword. If you find it hard to visualise how this works, you can use counting: for instance if the third square on row two is black, then the third square from the end of row twelve is also black (on a 13x13 grid) - e. Note that other types of symmetry do not assist the solver quite as much as a fully symmetrical grid. For instance, if the solver notices that a number in the middle area of the grid refers to an Across clue, then the square to the left of that number must be black. This video walks through the solve of a jigsaw (irregular) sudoku, and you can try the puzzle before you watch. To make things even more difficult, the clues are devoid of letter-counts; in other words, the lengths of the solutions are not given.

You should use this information in conjunction with the clues under the grid to help you get started. If you know the rules of sandwich sudoku but aren't sure how best to tackle a puzzle, this video walks through a puzzle and how to solve it to get you started. Hopefully we have helped you solve Skeleton, if you have a moment we'd love to see you join our growing crossword community and contribute some answers of your own. This small piece of kit is designed to make building your Quiz, Crossword or Puzzle question more effective.

Armed with the clues alone you will need to work out the grid pattern and the solution to the puzzle. It's worth bearing in mind that the minimum length of an answer is virtually always 3 letters, so if you are creating a grid pattern with 2-letter words you are probably going wrong somewhere. At the start of any skeleton crossword, you will invariably be given some information to start you off: some black squares in the grid, and often some clue numbers.
