About this deal

If the load you are washing is heavily soiled, add ½ cup of baking soda to the load. If you want to use a cold water cycle, place your nuts in a mason jar full of hot water and let them soak in it while you prepare your load. Those nuts are also good for washing delicates or even hand-washing your clothes. PS – Southwestern Ontario locals: I got mine from these folks. Find them at the Leamington Farmer’s Market!

A little note: Soap Nuts have been used for thousands of years as a natural washing detergent. Also known as Soap Berries, they grow on trees of the sapindus genus and are a source of saponin, a natural soap which cleans and freshens your clothes. Soap nuts can easily be made into a detergent powder. The key to making soap nut powder is to use a powerful grinder or blender to grind them up into a fine, consistent powder with a flour-like texture. Soap nuts are naturally anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and antimicrobial, and can be used to help keep your home and your laundry hygienically clean. Just stand the soapnuts in cold or warm water. We never use the hot method where the soap nuts are simmered on a stove as this creates clouds of steam, used lots of energy and destroys the saponins. So do try our easy ‘cold or warm water method!’ The gentle cleaning features of these nuts help in maintaining the colour of clothes longer. You can use the soap nuts for hand wash and machine wash effectively and they can be used for both white and coloured fabrics (between 30° and 90°). Because they are naturally sourced and hypoallergenic, they are the perfect alternative for people who are allergic to chemical detergents.Wash nuts, also known as soap berries , are a natural and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional detergents and cleaning agents. Although they are called nuts by many, cashew nuts are actually dried berries that come from the soap tree Sapindus mukorossi , which grows primarily in India and Nepal. Unlike traditional commercial detergents, which contain a range of synthetic chemicals, optical brighteners, and fragrances, saponins leave no residues on your laundry. Would I swap my regular detergent for the cheaper, eco-friendly soap nuts? I’m very sad to say that I wouldn’t. The reason that I’m not happy about this is because they could possibly save me a (very) small fortune. They are such good value for money that I don’t think there is another detergent out there that can come close to how much they can save you.

If you are trying to lose weight and all you have in your salad are lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and low-fat dressing, you may be hungry later," Dr. Delichatsios explains. "Nuts are a good way to make it more filling; they round out the meal. Otherwise it might not be calorically dense enough and leave you hungry." No smell of chemicals in the house while the dishwasher was in operation or when I opened the door. Soap Nuts are gentle on your skin and clothes, and ensure that colours stay brighter for longer. Additional key attributes: hypoallergenic and biodegradable. If you live in Scottish Highlands, Scottish Isles, Ireland & Channel Islands please call for a price for express delivery. Can you imagine anything more eco-friendly? Washing your laundry with dried fruit that can be composted? Anyway, they contain naturally-occurring saponins that, when mixed with water, have the power to lift stains and grime. To do your laundry, you just toss a few nuts into a little cloth bag and then throw that into your wash, which you can use a number of times before you compost the nuts. So far we have only talked about positive things, but like everything it has its cons. We explain things you should pay attention to : I’ve been using soap nuts for my laundry for the last four months. (Except on diapers. I’ve continued to use my homemade detergent on those).

Collectused soap nuts in a jar until you have about a dozen of them. Place them into amuslin bag and put them into 4 cups of boiling water. Let them simmer for 20minutes. Add an additional 2 cups of water and simmer for 10 more minutes. Remove them from the heat and let cool.Dish soap can contain a variety of harsh surfactants, synthetic fragrances, and other chemicals that you may want to avoid ingesting for a range of reasons. Soap nut powder can be mixed with water when needed providing a longer shelf-life. Additionally, mixing it with water can make for a great abrasive cleaner - for example as a carpet cleaner to remove stains. Soap nuts are most commonly used for laundry. While you can simply throw some nuts into your laundry loads and let them work their magic, many HE and more modern washing machines won’t be very happy with you. However, substituting a 1-ounce portion of nuts for equivalent small portions of red and processed meat is a good move, according to major based at the Harvard School of Public Health. NO BOIL RECIPE: Alternatively you can add 10 soapnuts to a kilner/plastic jar and 1 litre of hot tap water. Shake and leave to soak and when water turns brown the soap has been extracted. Use liquid as needed and when jar is empty replenish with hot water. You can keep doing this until no soap is present in the soap nuts.

But nuts are worth the "risks" if you know how to eat them. Nuts are a good source of key nutrients, healthy fats, and protein. They can jazz up salads and side dishes, adding crunchy flavor. The reason I discovered the issue was because out almond milk was grainy the first time I made it from scratch... after some investigation I of course discovered that the culprit was our dirty almonds! So I paid a little more attention the last time I washed a load of Lydia’s laundry. Just for you guys.

Nuts to round out meals

I haven’t noticed any change in the level of cleanliness with the soap nuts compared to when I used my homemade detergent. Our clothes come out clean and not smelling like anything. (Likewise, I never noticed a change in cleanliness when I switched from commercial detergent to the homemade stuff two years ago, either). After 30 minutes, remove your pot from the heat, strain out the nuts, and allow the liquid to cool before adding it to your sterilized jar. But our laundry habits too a sudden turn when we bought a new toy last year: we’ve been enjoying the LaundryPure machine . It uses UV light for some disinfection and an ionizer to make the water as soft as soap makes it….so no soap is needed..no product at all is needed. The smell of the laundry is unscented and fresh….though I occasionally put a few drops of essential oil into the wash for fragrance, but that’s pure luxury. When you add soap nuts to warm or hot water, they release saponins, which act as natural surfactants – the same group of chemicals found in mainstream detergents that get your clothes and surfaces clean.
