About this deal

At the top of the handle is a metal shaft that extends from the motor inside the handle. It is to this that the brush head fits. This is because Oral-B brushes typically sell at 50% less than retail, so you appear to be getting a ‘deal’. The pressure sensor doesn’t work as you would expect: you won’t know when you are brushing too hard I like the slim and grippy handle. The 2 week battery life is satisfactory and, most importantly, it does a good job of cleaning your teeth.

The toothbrush will stand up on a countertop, even though the base of it has a recess into which the prong on the inductive charging stand fits.It is the same shape and materials of the handles found on the more premium Pro 2, Pro 3, Smart 4 and Smart 5 models. While Oral-B has partnered with schemes such as TerraCycle in some countries, it does not yet have its own recycling scheme for used brush heads or faulty products. Oral-B has for many years built pressure sensors into their toothbrushes and the Pro 1 is no exception, but the configuration here isn’t optimum. There is no visible pressure sensor. This means no red light on the handle that lights up to tell you it has been activated.

I do like the small round brush heads. They are easy to move around the mouth and provide a great clean to the teeth. It is quite rare, in such a cost effective model to have a travel case included, but you do get this with the Pro 1 680.Positively, it is all paper based and does not have a polystyrene inner tray like Oral-B have used in the past. Unlike other Oral-B brushes, the pressure sensor is not visible on the handle. Nor is it audible. This means that if you apply too much pressure as you brush, you don’t know about it. Technically the sound and brushing sensation do change when the sensor is active, but you have to be paying attention to notice, it’s easy to miss or ignore. The brush head supplied will depend on the variant selected, but it is one of a number of different brush head styles available from Oral-B. A small but noteworthy point is that the motor in the Pro 2 series is a little more powerful. What this means is that the head moves a bit more during each clean. It could help produce better results in the long term, but honestly it does not make a significant difference, you still get a great clean from the 680. When charging the battery charging icon flashes green and it will stop flashing and go out when the brush is fully charged.

Otherwise, it has the same tech and the same key strengths as the iO Series 6 and iO Series 9, giving you a smoother brush with less vibration than the older Genius models, yet still delivering an excellent ‘fresh from the dentists’ clean. You also get the same pressure sensor and timer, the same two weeks plus battery life, and the same OLED display and app-connected features. Given that the differences between this brush and the Series 9 are minor, the Series 8 makes a pretty strong case for itself as the best Oral-B brush to buy. This strip of rubber/silicon material not only adds a design touch to the handle but actually plays a pivotal role in allowing you to keep a secure grip of it in hand. The blue bristles within the head will fade over time to a pale blue/translucent colour. This is a cue for you to change. It's common knowledge these days, but everyone is recommended to spend two full minutes cleaning their teeth. As a nod to this, the Oral-B Pro 2 2500 provides an audible warning via a slight pause in the brush motor every 30 seconds. This acts as a cue during brushing for you to change your focus between the four different quadrants in your gob: upper right, upper left, lower right and lower left. It’s a nice touch that works really well. The rear of the handle has a series of ridges that run from the top to about half way down the handle. These act as gripping points for the hand and fingers when in use, these are particularly good if your hands are wet. They are a little harsher to the fingertips than the rubber on the front but they do the job well. One advantage buying Oral-B is that you can use all tooth brush head models on every tooth brush. Also the added 3rd year warranty is a great bonus ! Last but not least the Li-Ion batteries in an entry level device are hard to beat but remember that Philips Sonicare already had them for years.
