About this deal

From ingredients to the amount, there are several elements that separate different varieties of potting soil from each other. Before you choose a mix for your plants, consider the following factors. Plant Potted plants are more susceptible to root rot and other diseases because of the water not being able to drain away as effectively as it normally would in a garden bed. Unlike normal garden dirt, potting soil contains materials like peat moss, aged or composted bark, coconut coir, perlite, pumice, and sand, which allow air and moisture to permeate properly through the soil and stop the soil from becoming heavy and dry. Depending on the Miracle-Gro products you use, Miracle-Gro may have high levels of salt, which over time strip your soil of its natural nutrients and prevent plants from absorbing them.

So what does potting soil do? Potting soil should have the right ingredients to oxygenate and provide nutrients for plants, which is why estate gardener and horticulturist Brooke Medlin says potting mixes are typically composed of peat, a little bit of shredded pine bark, and superheated minerals like perlite or vermiculite to aerate the soil. “Peat and perlite are really made for aeration, so they’re found in pretty much every potting mix you’re going to find,” she says. The ingredients in a potting soil are also meant to “improve drainage, encourage moisture retention, resist compaction,” Witz explains. The latter means the soil becomes dense, making it hard for a plant to absorb water.Monsteras need lots of space because they don’t just grow up, they grow out, too. It probably isn’t the best choice for a studio apartment or small living room, since its full size will be around 3 feet wide (but hey, we also can’t blame you if you like to cuddle with your plants!). If you do have the room for it, help it achieve its full glory. Place monstera in bright, indirect light. Avoid putting it right in front of your sunny window or in a dark corner. Rotate your plant if you start to notice the leaves are leaning toward the light or not developing as well on the side farthest from the window. Parents of kids and pets alike, take note: Monstera is toxic when ingested in large quantities, so it’s best to keep it out of reach of curious minds. How To Water Monstera Growing aloe vera is a low-maintenance experience, as this tough succulent plant needs little TLC to thrive. At the same time, planting aloe brings big rewards, both as a skin aid and an attractive addition to your indoor décor. Succulent and cactus potting mix: The sand in this type of potting mix ensures the fast drainage that is key for growing succulents and cacti. A variation of this is cacti, palm, and citrus potting mix, which also contains recycled forest products and pH adjusters such as oyster shell lime to keep the potting mix at a slightly alkaline range. You can find more information about these pests and how to control them in our article, How to Get Rid of Aphids and Spider Mites in Your Garden. Is Miracle-Gro potting soil toxic?

Potting soil isn’t the same as fertilizer, which acts more like a vitamin to your plants. It also isn’t always the same as a potting mix. Although the two are “functionally pretty much the same,” potting soil — as its name suggests — sometimes has actual dirt in it, whereas a mix never does, according to blogger Erinn Witz of Seeds and Spades. Still, even with that very technical point, the two terms are usually used interchangeably or branded as “soil mix” (you’ll see both below). Snake plants are actually in the succulent family and count agaves among the members of their family tree. (Just don’t try to harvest them to make tequila!) They have many of the same easy-care attributes as their agave cousins: They’re very forgiving if you forget to water them, don’t require much sunlight to grow, and do a great job purifying the air—perfect for a stuffy office. If you’re cultivating an indoor garden of houseplants, a snake plant’s upright, spiky habit will add a bit of interesting texture amid the ferns, palms, and spider plants.

Another benefit that is gained from using potting soil is that the natural ingredients used in the soil will last for a long time, so you can re-use the potting soil. Potting Mix Tomatoes are a warm-season crop that is usually planted during late spring and early summer, after all danger of frost is past. You can either start from seeds or buy young tomato plants like the strong, vigorous ones from Bonnie Plants®. Starting out with plants that are already well on their way to maturity is a great way to shorten the time you have to wait to harvest your first juicy, delicious tomato.
