About this deal

Perhaps the main USP of the Burgtec Enduro MK3 is that it is available in a 42.5mm length. It may sound daft and all rather Princess-and-the-pea, but a couple of mm here and there with stems can certainly be felt by experienced riders. So if you’ve tried 40mm and 45mm stems and not quite gelled with them, here’s the (42.5mm length) stem for you! Stem length is one of a number of factors, along with head tube angle and fork rake, that affects a bike’s handling. Stem length has a big impact on the overall fit and ride of your bike. Basically the issue I have is I need to get the fit on my winter bike and CX bike as close as I can to the Retul fit I had done on the Merida or the pirformis sydrome rears its ugly (and painful) head again! Found on some mountain bikes and also some drop-bar machines such as Giant’s cyclocross bikes. 1 1/8in steerer, 35mm bar clamp The Hixon, and the lighter, narrower bar Frazer XC combo, add an instantly futuristic look to your front end. They’re available to mimic fashionably short stem reaches and the latest versions extend span from 760 to 780mm. If the angle of sweep and rotation works for you the actual bar feel is really nicely balanced between accuracy and buzz damping control. First job is to work out what stems will actually fit on to your bike. You’ll need to know your fork’s steerer size and handlebar diameter. CNC-machined from a heat-treated 2014-series aluminum and hard anodized, the Apex 35 features clamps with a 240-degree wrap, allowing Renthal to make the body of the stem a bigger diameter to increase stiffness while saving as much weight as possible. The twin clamps also use a zero-gap design, so they close fully at the bottom and then you snug up the top two bolts using a crisscross process. This simplifies the setup because you just bottom out the lower bolts to correct torque and then ensure even tightening of the top two. When a fastener is threaded all the way through the clamp it makes it stronger, there is less stress on the bolts, and you also reduce the risk of rounding a bolt head or clamping the faceplate unevenly. While a basic cold-forged stem with a bar clamp at one end and a handlebar clamp at the other is all anyone needs, some people like to be different. If that’s you, then USE’s ingenious jigsaw puzzle stem is a light and trail-worthy way to bolt your bars on. However, you can still find quill stems on some retro-style fixies and singlespeed bikes, as well as some boutique custom builds or cheaper town bikes. Bike stem standards Personally I have 3 three stems and two bars that I will swap out. My default is a 0 degree rise 60mm stem on a flat 720mm bar, I will swap in a -17 stem for big pedalling days. For more aggressive riding I have a 50mm stem on a small rise 740mm width bar. These swaps change the feel of the bike dramatically and even require a bit of suspension tuning to rebalance the bike. On that note, you can also change your stem length to adjust the reach from the saddle to the handlebar. Bike stems connect the handlebars to the steering tube of the bike frame. Getting the right stem is essential for customising height and ensuring you feel comfortable on your bike. The height of your handlebars is one of the components that dictates your stance in the saddle, whether you’re more upright or seating more forward. Road Bike Stems

I’m a regular average sized person though so I fit most bikes in my preferred size without making dramatic changes. I know taller people are more likely to use longer stems for ergonomic purposes and short people might use shorter stems to fit their bikes better.

Using advanced manufacturing techniques honed over decades in our CNC machine shop, we continue our proud tradition of offering riders uncompromising components. When we talk about stem standards here, we’re primarily talking about compatibility with the streerer tube on your bike (measured in inches), but also the handlebar clamp (measured in millimetres).

Best mountain bike stems 2023 – the best stems to sharpen up

Stubby stems are now the norm, with anything longer than 50mm rarely seen How we tested the best mountain bike stemsGenerally speaking, a shorter stem will result in faster handling, while a longer stem will result in slower, more predictable handling. Cutting straight to the chase, the pinstripe and crisp CNC vibe is either your thang or it isn’t. Truth be told, even if it is your thang, it may just simply not suit your bike. The swoopy, candy colour, gloss finish of certain carbon frames doesn’t lend itself to being paired with a chunk of lasered alloy. Old-school bikes had a quill stem. This was an inverted L-shape, with the shaft of the stem slotting down into the top of the fork’s steerer tube, and secured by an expander bolt with an (in most cases) Allen key head at its top.
