About this deal

So because I’m obsessed with perfumes, I did the very hard work of going through all of my fragrances (all 89 of them—for real) to compile a full list of the absolute best vanilla perfumes I’ve ever tested. I found summer scents, cheap perfumes, new perfumes, and long-lasting fragrances that all have a vanilla note—and not all of them are sweet, tbh! Peep all of my faves here: Perfumes fall into two categories: eau de parfum (EDP) or eau de toilette (EDT). An EDP contains more fragrance oil than an EDT, meaning the EDP will last longer on the skin. This makes sense why the oilier your skin, the more intense a scent will be, and the less you will need. If you want something less fragrant, opt for a body mist. A body mist is the lightest form of fragrance and is typically cheaper. Start small This woody scent pairs spicy saffron, fresh florals and, what smells like, a damp oak tree after fresh rainfall. If you're after a scent that'll turn heads and get you countless compliments, this is it. With fresh sweet notes of rose, jasmine and orchid, combined with base notes of musk and bergamot, this is a serious crowd-pleaser. The aldehyde note gives it a fresh-linens vibe, yet all of the bright citrus from orange blossom and mandarin orange. If typical coconut-y, sunscreen-esque summer scents feel a bit too forced for you, def smell this one, which has all of the beachy white florals, but instead pairs it with musk for some creaminess.

Cosmopolitan 25 Best Patchouli Perfumes for Every Scent - Cosmopolitan

We know that celebrity perfumes can be a bit hit-and-miss but if you like your scents on the sweeter side, you’ll love this, even if you’re not an Arianator.

Life's Full of Surprises...

Can something be summery and Christmasy at the same time? Because this fragrance manages to do just that. And ooooh, the tobacco note gives it a deep, smokier finish. I wear this when I wanna be wrapped up in a cosy cashmere blanket. If there's one thing the 2020s have brought us (other than, erm, let's not even mention it), it's celebrity beauty brands. Billie Eilish joined the masses with the drop of her new fragranc e, Eau de Parfum, just last year. And trust, the scent is just as pretty as the bottle. One of my favorite things to do at the end of the year is to give an ode to the coolest new fragrance drops that reigned supreme (I am a beauty editor, after all). Like, yes, I have a couple of signature perfumes (love you, Casablanca Lily, and Flowerbomb) that'll always be staples in my lineup, but I'm personally a fan of testing and trying as many scents as I can get my hands on. I mean, what's the point of wearing the same boring, blah scent every day when there's a whole world of new perfumes out there legit waiting for you? And because we've got only a little bit of time left in 2021, the best new perfumes of this year need to be recognized because, well, they deserve it.

100% Chilled Cosmopolitan perfume - a fragrance for women 2019

At first, I thought this was just the corporate version of Warm Vanilla Sugar by Bath and Body Works, thanks to its warm brown sugar and amber notes. But she has range, y’all. It has hints of vanilla orchid and jasmine that give it a slightly floral edge, helping to keep it from smelling like food-grade vanilla (IYKYK). If there was a well-rounded vanilla perfume, it would be this one. I’m already planning to bring this vanilla perfume on a tropical vacay this summer because it smells exactly like the person I want to be on the beach: breezy, bright, fun, and fresh. It’s filled with tropical white florals (like freesia, gardenia, and orange blossom), along with fresh bergamot and creamy vanilla and coconut that blend together to basically smell like grown-up sunscreen. Just because you like patchouli doesn’t mean you always want to smell like you’ve got straight patchouli oil on all day long. That’s where La Vie Est Belle comes in— it’s a sweet floral scent (hi to the iris, vanilla, and warm sugar) with just a whisper of patchouli. It’s basically the La Croix of patchouli perfumes. But although this is an eau de parfum (which usually means it is denser and has a stronger scent profile, meaning it’ll last longer), this perfume is fairly weak, which I actually prefer for days when I just want a slight waft of my fragrance. But if you like a stronger scent, dab a little Vaseline or Aquaphor on your wrists before spritzing this on to give the perfume something to grip onto and increase the longevity a lil bit. Fruity, citrusy, and all-around yummy, this bright fragrance from Ellis Brooklyn feels like a shot of happy energy each time you spritz it. At first, you’ll smell a sweet, light mix of pear, fig, and coconut, which will slowly mellow into a rich musk throughout the day. Truly one of my favorites for year-round wear.

Welcome

Jo Malone’s Orange Blossom was the signature scent of Kate Middleton and Prince William’s wedding at Westminster Abbey, so you know it’s a good one. Clementine flower, white lilac, and vetiver come together to create a fresh floral perfume that’s truly one of a kind. This perfume has a cult-like following for good reason. The smoky and woodsy blend of oud, sandalwood, and vetiver smell straight-up sexy and mysterious. It’s the perfect perfume for date night or going out. Well done, Tom Ford. A warm blend of musk, ambrette, and ambroux link up with iris root and pink pepper in this cheap perfume from Glossier to create a scent that's fresh and clean with juuuust the right amount of spice. It'll draw people in without being in your face. The Phluid Project—a company rooted in amplifying youth's voices and rejecting binary gender norms—formulated a line of EDP perfumes that are vegan and cruelty-free. The notes in this scent are sweet mandarin, jasmine dew, and amber, which create an alluring warm and spicy scent.

10 best Le Labo perfumes (tested and reviewed for 2023 UK)

You can't round up the best perfumes without a mention of Le Labo's most famous fragrance, Santal 33. At this point, it's the quintessential woodsy scent that's been duped time and time again, but the original will forever be one of my favourites. Although patchouli is often found in musky, woody, and spicy fragrances, my favorite is when it’s paired with florals to give the whole scent a bright yet grounded finish. This cult-favorite perfume is heavy on the jasmine when you first spray it, but slowly mellows into a spicy finish after a few hours on your skin, making it perfect for a night out. Say hello to your new favorite scent. This affordable perfume is actually a mist (it's lighter and less concentrated than a regular EDP or EDT) and can be used to fragrance your body and hair. The warm notes of vanilla and caramel are a total treat. This should be obvious, but as someone who has always been lowkey embarrassed by their love of cutesy, teenage-y, sweet and fruity scents (i.e., ~gourmands~), I’ve forced myself to wear “grown-up” musks even when I really disliked them. So regardless of your tastes, own them and channel them into your fragrance. Listen, I'll be the first to admit that I'm not super into rose perfumes. They tend to smell powdery and mature IMO. That said, I'll always make an exception for Rose 31 because it's so light and not at all cloying or heavy. If you prefer something a bit sweeter, take a cue from Rihanna and try one of her favourite scents - Kilian's Love Don't Be Shy Eau de Parfum. Loaded up with sweet floral top notes of orange blossom and neroli, combined with and a base of creamy musk, vanilla and caramel. Yum, right? This cheap perfume reminds me of laundry detergent, in the best possible way. It’s fresh and cozy, kind of like a Sunday afternoon. It’s the perfect everyday scent because of the subtle bergamot, peony, and amber notes. Plus, it’s a clean fragrance, meaning there’s nothing questionable in the formula (aka no sulfates, parabens, or phthalates). Selfishly, peonies are my all-time favorite flower, so naturally I have no issue smelling like one. Still, even if florals aren’t your thing, don’t be intimidated— this isn’t your typical stuffy, overpowering, floral perfume. It’s incredibly light and pretty, so you’ll only smell like a whisper of peony rather than a scream. Beth Gillette is the beauty editor at Cosmopolitan with nearly five years of experience researching, writing, and editing perfume and beauty stories that range from stretch-mark creams to hair-removal creams. She’s an authority in all perfume categories but an expert when it comes to vanilla perfumes after sniffing, testing, and reviewing nearly every perfume launch over the last year. Hate florals? Hate musk? Hate anything other than the sweet, cozy scent of vanilla? Hi, same. As someone whose signature body-lotion scent has been vanilla anything since middle school, I absolutely love this ~grown-up~ version from Kayali.
