About this deal

In keeping with the rest of the series, it's a transparent fragrance that lends itself to liberal application, and it's probably better suited to warm rather than cool weather. I found the lasting power to be just so-so, maybe not quite so good as my favorite (still) of the Jardin series, Jardin Sur Le Nil.

The fragrance has gradually become a bit more bitter and dry. The aroma of wild grasses and herbs blows around me. The sweetness is slowly becoming a memory. The freshness is now that of just cut grass. An enchanting scent that I will never forget, I think. Lively, it makes you enjoy the hours together, not too long with a fragrance creature like this, elated and joyful. Do I love it? I do not. I found it quite easy to wear, and there is something cheering about it; it made me smile to spray it on while the cold spring rain was tapping on my window. But it is, after all, still apples and pears, and it does not captivate me. Is it worth a try? But of course. You didn't think I'd say something by Jean-Claude Ellena wasn't even worth trying, did you? I agree that in several stages and note arrangements, it recalls a lot of Ellena’s previous works with Hermes – Sur Le Nil, Kelley Caleche, Pamplemousse Rose… but it is fleeting. But I kind of like that actually. Not only does it serve as an airborn “calling card” for Ellena, but it is Ellena’s way of bringing the Hermes Jardin serious home – nodding to other scents in the Hermes collections, playing on the creative “home” and birthplace of Hermes and its garden in Paris. That idea kind of pushes Sur Le Toit ahead of my other favorite in the Jardin range, Sur Le Nil, because it evokes more of the legacy and bredth of why the Jardin concept is something Hermes works so hard on.Jardin sur le toit -terrasse aménagé avec des plantes couvre-sol et plantes grasses et avec une allée en gravier blanc

The garden's a little overgrown. High grasses sway in the wind. Rare plants exude grassy scents that tell of summer in a roof garden in the big city. People like to listen to them. Because they're poetic stories. A bit of Oscar Wilde. My “love affair” with Hermes and JCE all started with Terre d’ Hermes and has not stopped there… I own one large and five tiny Hermessences, all of the Colognes de Hermes, and now all four Jardins. Safe to say I am an appreciative fan of M. Ellena’s work and aromatic aethestic… Jardin Sur Le Toit starts out grapefruity-citrusy and sharp — for a second or two, it almost recalls Jardin Sur Le Nil — but it's only briefly so, then it's crisp apple and pear with plenty of green (the notes: apple, pear, rose, green grass, basil, magnolia and compost). It's bright and tart, and the green notes add a decent bite without being overwhelming. It's young and spring-like and fresh, and very Jean-Claude Ellena, which will either please you or it won't.I must think of Leo Tolstoy: "All happy families are alike, every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way" And reflect on whether all the gardens in which you were once happy, look alike in fragrance. Un Jardin Sur le Nil' - I really love this one, I think it still has to be my favourite. The zingyness of the grapefruit in the opening is energising, with a slight hint of the mango appearing shortly after. It dried down after half an hour or so, leaving behind a light, pleasant floral. Full bottle worthy. It is demanding - perhaps because it brings the garden idyll to a meta-level. I see the individual components happily whirling around in the playful battle for supremacy. This is not about concrete scents, but about emotions and impressions that briefly light up and immediately mix again in the round dance: cool, precious, fresh, green; fruits, dry sweetness, powdery, seductive, idiosyncratic. Close to nature and yet luxurious like queens playing shepherdesses in the park of Versailles. Pear, rosemary, apple, rose, grass, magnolia. Fruity, floral, juicy, but also light, airy. Still reasonably durable. High quality, but also somehow unfathomable and charmingly contradictory.

Only then do the fruit trees bloom - and how they bloom: pinkish-white the apple (still these blossoms are woven into wreaths), white and somewhat coarser the pear, delicate pink and fragile the cherry trees. But first comes and remains the scent of fresh greenery, of new, plump foliage and blossoms; warmed through by the sun and carried upward by a light playful swirl of air. Hermès has captured this fragrance in "Un Jardin sur le Toit": fresh, unselfconscious and full of hope! If this fine sweetness had a color, it'd be green. A bright green with white flower spots here and there.

Un Jardin Sur le Toit' - This was my partner's favourite, which he described as 'smelling just like the outdoors'. I agree! Lots of rosemary, something lightly floral, soil maybe, but also.. an odd sour note. I sniffed my wrists a lot that morning trying to figure out what it was and by the description I think it's the 'compost' note. Just like the outdoors indeed. The fruit gives way (partly) to the flowers: a gentle rosewater and magnolia blend that sort-of-vaguely recalls Kelly Calèche, although Sur Le Toit is more decidedly unisex. The base is a pale gentle musk, more vegetal than animalic, with just the slightest suggestion of warm soil.
